The new skin regime to adopt for every ageing concern
In the constant search for a regime that really works and so many products to choose from, it's easy to forget or know what ingredients are most effective for your skin type or concern. As we get older and our skin gets more stubborn and resistant to ingredients, as well as environmental factors such as pollution, many women find the efficacy of their products is less and the trusty moisturiser that used to leave your skin plump and firm no longer does the job.
The rise of mature skin concerns such as adult acne, rosacea and pigmentation can mean that you should be tailoring your choice of creams according to your hormonal balance at that stage in your life. Here, leading specialist Dr Rabia Malik lists a morning and evening solution for these common, mature skin woes.
Acne
AM Solution: An AHA or BHA (alpha or beta hydroxy acid) cleanser
Cosmedix Benefit Clean, £42.03
This salicylic infused cleanser will effectively cleanse your skin and deep clean your pores which is the first step to clearing up breakouts. Effective cleansing means skin will be prepped for any products applied thereafter.
PM Solution: Jojoba oil
This is the best hydrator for acne prone skin as its molecular structure mimics that of sebum and it does not block pores. Use instead of a moisturiser at night after cleansing.
Rosacea
AM Solution: Niacinamide
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, £6
This is a water soluble form of vitamin B3 that research has shown may help relieve some rosacea symptoms such as flushing and facial redness. Best found in a serum or cream, applied after cleansing and before SPF.
PM Solution: Peptides
Peptide? Night Recovery Cream-Oil, £49
These reduce inflammation which is the main cause of rosacea, so look for a cream or serum containing peptides to add to your regime.
Fine lines and wrinkles
AM Solution: Hyaluronic acid.
Skinceuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifer, £85
Using a serum or cream that combines low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and well hydrated skin is the first step in minimising the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles.
PM Solution: Mandelic Acid
Dr. Wu Intensive Renewal Lotion With Mandelic Acid, £45.05
An alpha hydroxy acid helps stimulate collagen and elastin, thereby decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Pigmentation
AM Solution: Vitamin C
Dr Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Brighten & Firm Vitamin C Serum, £79
Look for L-ascorbic acid in formulations, as this is the chemically correct form of vitamin c that helps to break down pigment. Use in serum form before applying moisturiser and SPF.
PM Solution:Lactic acid
This alpha hydroxy acid will help resurface and brighten the skin by exfoliating and stimulating new skin cell production
Brightness
AM Solution: Vitamin C
The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser, £16
For optimum efficacy a powder or encapsulated formula is great or alternatively look to a moisturiser with high vitamin C levels. Apply before moisturiser and SPF.
PM Solution: Retinol
Bea Skin 2% Retinol Serum with Vitamin E £54
Use a retinol at night to increase skin cell turnover which will resurface and brighten skin over time.
