Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's separation shocked the world when the news first broke, especially as Will remained silent–that is, until now.

While his estranged wife divulged never-before-heard details about the pair's apparent breakup seven years ago, Will was tight-lipped, only hinting at the situation with a cryptic post on Instagram that showed the Emancipation actor relaxing on a boat alongside the caption, "Notifications off :)."

But on Sunday, Oct. 15, the 55-year-old Oscar winner broke his silence.

"When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in," he said in an email to The New York Times. "And you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties."

He went on, explaining that Jada's confessions–which come ahead of her new memoir, Worthy– "kind of woke [him] up," adding that the Girls Trip actress was more "resilient, clever and compassionate than [he’d] understood."

A day after Will's comments were published, Jada appeared on NBC's Today show, where she told host Hoda Kotb that the estranged pair are "working hard" to heal their relationship of nearly 26 years.

"There's no finding another great love, and I think that's the point," she said during the Oct. 16 episode. "It's like we are in a place now that we are in a deep, healing space. And we are really concentrating on healing the relationship between us."

"There's no divorce on paper. We really have been working hard," she said. "That's the whole thing. We are working very hard at bringing our relationship together. Back to a life partnership."

"Here's the thing about husband-wife marriage for me, for my healing process," the 52-year-old continued, "I came into that with very specific ideas that were blocks to me seeing Will as who he is. He can't be this perfect, ideal guy husband. I have to be able to accept him for the human that he is, (and) he accepts me for the human that I am. And we want to love each other there."
