Will Smith Defends 'Sloppy' Marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith During Unexpected Cameo
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
Will Smith showed he still has plenty of love for Jada Pinkett Smith by making a surprise appearance during her talk at Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Pinkett Smith was in conversation with CNN's Laura Coates discussing headline-making memoir Worthy, when the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum made his unexpected appearance.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Coates set up his surprise by asking Pinkett Smith, "What did your family think about this book? You know what, actually, why don't I just ask your family? I think they're here. I know your mom is here." She then asked, "But, is anyone else here?"
Smith made his way to the stage as the audience gasped, and had nothing but kind words to share about his wife.
"I had huge dreams of what I wanted to do in the world and in my life, and I was on fire with a vision. And as I stand here before you today, I am happier than I've ever been in my entire life," he shared, adding that his dreams were "largely built on the foundation of Jada's sacrifices."
He also noted that he'd missed the online chatter about whether they were heading for divorce, as he was in Papau New Guinea assisting on a project about biodiversity and didn't find out until he arrived to Sydney, Australia.
"Our union is a sloppy experiment in unconditional love," he said. "Jada is the best friend I have ever had on this planet, and I am going to show up for her and support her for the rest of my life."
Before Smith appeared during the talk, the Gotham alum told Coates that she and her husband are "good." She added, "The truth of the matter is I'm not leaving Will's side and he's not going to leave mine. We've been on a powerful quest. And I'm happier than I've ever been."
Recently, Pinkett Smith was interviewed by Hoda Kotb on the Today show, where she confessed that she and Smith separated in 2016. She also made mention of their estrangement in her memoir.
However, after sparking widespread conversation online about their marriage, Pinkett Smith made another Today show appearance days after, clarifying to Kotb that she and the I Am Legend star are now "super solid" and had to go their separate ways to "really see each other and find out way back."
She added, "There is no divorce in theory. We really have been working hard at bringing our relationship together, back to a life partnership."
