Someone had the nerve to tell Lady Gaga to get a nose job — and she said no

Lady Gaga says she was once told to get a nose job — and she said no.

“Before my first single ever came out, it was suggested I get a nose job, but I said no. I love my Italian nose,” Gaga, who stars in the upcoming film A Star Is Born alongside actor and director Bradley Cooper, recently told the U.K. Mirror. “If people wanted me to look like a sexpot, I would look like the opposite. If they said ‘Try dancing and looking this way’ I would always flip it on its head and do it my way.”

On Friday, at the film’s London premiere, Gaga told Sky News that avoiding plastic surgery stemmed from a simple desire to “be who I was.” She also suggested that she had drawn inspiration for her character, Ally, an aspiring musician who falls in love with rock star Jackson Maine (played by Cooper) in the remake of the several earlier films by the same name, from her past vulnerabilities.

Still, as Gaga told Sky News of the difference between herself and her character, “I really believed in myself when I started out pounding on doors to break down all of the barriers in the music industry, I really had courage. She doesn’t have that, she’s not brave and she’s not full of self-confidence.”

The confession isn’t surprising, given that Gaga once draped herself in charcuterie to accept an MTV VMA award in 2010 (hello, meat dress) and recently posed nude for a series of artistic Instagram pics.

Her famous peers can relate. Someone once had the gall to tell Jennifer Lopez to park some pounds. “They didn’t bother me at all,” Lopez told InStyle in May. “But I got a lot of flak for it from people in the industry. They’d say, ‘You should lose a few pounds,’ or ‘You should do this or do that.’ It finally got to the point that I was like, ‘This is who I am. I’m shaped like this.’ Everybody I grew up with looked like that, and they were all beautiful to me. I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I still don’t!”

And supermodel Karlie Kloss was not spared from hearing weight-loss advice. “I was called both too fat and too thin by a casting agent on the same day,” Kloss said, as reported in the New York Post in 2017. She added, “I don’t want to please anyone but myself.”

Halle Berry once told Yahoo Lifestyle that being a “beauty role model” comes with pressure to succumb to nip-and-tuck procedures. “When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, ‘To stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing?’” she said. “I won’t lie and tell you that those things don’t cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me. ‘You know if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better.’ It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That’s what I feel like. I just have kept reminding myself that beauty really is as beauty does, and it is not so much about my physical self. Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us.”

And Salma Hayek is plain fed up. “The amount of pressure on women now, it’s crazy,” she once told the Guardian. “You have to be much better than your male colleagues, just so you can maybe try and get the same salary as them. And you still have to be a good wife and mother. And now you also have to be skinny, and you have to look 20 when you’re 40. It’s too much. We need to stop with the crazy expectations, give ourselves a break.”
