Somerset's St. John of God Parish Feast is back July 19-21. Here is what to expect

SOMERSET – St. John of God Parish in Somerset will be hosting its annual feast from July 19 and 21.

The celebration will feature Portuguese and American food, live music, fellowship and more.

“The Saint John of God Parish Feast is a family-friendly event our parish and community look forward to year-round… an exciting event that will bring the community together in a fun way,” said Pastor Jason Brilhante.

Here is what you need to know before you go:

Where and when is the St. John of God’s Feast?

The celebration will take place on the church grounds, located at 1036 Brayton Ave., Somerset.

On Friday and Saturday, the festa will open from 4 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.

Who will be performing?

Live entertainment will be provided by Back in the Day, a Rock n’ Roll 80’s tribute band hailing from Boston, on Friday and by Get Lucky band on Saturday. The music continues Sunday afternoon with DJ Slick.

When is the Feast Mass and Procession?

On Sunday, the Feast Mass in honor of the parish’s patron saint will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. and the procession will begin at 2 p.m.

The procession will feature Portuguese marching bands along with the statues of saints being carried by men and women, and many children dressed up as saints or biblical figures.

What’s on the menu?

There will be plenty of Portuguese and American foods, including the crowd-favorite malassadas.

Coming back this year are the popular bifana (pork steak) sandwiches. The menu will also include ca?oila (pulled pork) sandwiches, clam cakes and clam chowder, Portuguese steak, chouri?o and peppers, favas in addition to French fries, hot dogs, and hamburgers.

Drinks will also be available for purchase.

Are there any activities for kids?

Kids games will be available on Friday and Saturday evening.

How to win a prize?

Raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win cash prizes, starting at $300. The Portuguese Bazaar, too, is open for the thrill of unwrapping those tightly wrapped tickets to win a prize.

Donations of items for the Portuguese Bazaar are also welcome.
