PlayStation first announced PSVR2 last February. Nearly a year later we’re getting our first official look at the redesigned headset. It features a white and black color scheme modeled after the PS5 console. Truly, the PSVR2 boasts an orb-shaped design that will “keep you immersed in your game world”.

The official PSVR2 design was revealed by Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experience at PlayStation. The executive posted a lengthy statement on the official PlayStation Blog. Nishino said the team took inspiration from both the PS5 console and the PSVR2 controllers when building the headset. Whereas the PS5 has flat edges, the VR2 adds roundness and curvature more akin to the Sense controllers revealed earlier this year.

Aside from its roundness, the PSVR2 comes with some big design upgrades over the original headset. One of the most practical additions is the new vent system. It should allow for improved ventilation and reduce the chance of fogging up your display.

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow,” said Yujin Morisawa, senior art director at SIE. “I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

You’ll also find a new lens adjustment dial to easily find the optimal viewing distance. In addition, there’s a slimmer overall design and a built-in motor for headset feedback.

While plenty of changes are coming to PSVR2, many elements from the original PSVR can be found in the next-gen headset, as the team received “a lot of positive feedback” about its overall balance and weight. For example, the adjustable headband and scopes will be returning, and the headphone jack will remain in the same spot as the current headset.

PlayStation is yet to announce a release date or pricing for PSVR2. The original PSVR launched with a price tag of $400 in October 2016. But with intense competition from the Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index, expect to see a competitive price for the PSVR2.
