The 'The Sound of Music' Cast Then and Now: Catch Up With the Beloved von Trapp Family
"There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall, and the bells in the steeple too, and up in the nursery an absurd little bird, is popping out to say 'cuckoo'..." In the 58 years since the release of the beloved film, The Sound of Music, its cult following has only continued to grow with each generation that discovers it — and the beloved cast has changed drastically between then and now.
Based on the real von Trapp Family, who were a singing group formed from the children of former Austrian naval commander during World War I, the story follows Julie Andrews as Maria, who becomes the governess to a family of seven children under the supervision of their father, a retired naval Captain. Maria comes to love and care deeply for the children, as well as their father, and passes on to the seven Von Trapp children her love for music.
Family both on and off screen
Few musicals have had the same cultural impact that The Sound of Music did. It's nearly impossible to hear the chords of "Do-Re-Mi" or "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" and not want to sing along. And heartfelt melodies like "Edelweiss" will be forever cemented in our minds in the scene in which Captain Von Trapp sings tenderly to his family.
In a 2022 interview on the TODAY Show, Julie Andrews spoke of the bond she created with her fellow Sound of Music cast members: "We do keep in touch, but not on a really regular basis," she said. "I mean, Christmases, maybe birthdays and certainly get-togethers, but we just bonded so hard that I think we're family anyway."
