Special Delivery: more Humpty Dumpties
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — It’s not your imagination–Humpty Dumpty is alive and well in Colorado Springs, and there’s not one, but a slew of them throughout the city. These Humpties each enjoy their own special hobby from fishing to cooking and even playing checkers.
Egg-citing addition to Downtown: New Humpty Dumpties!
The newest in the crew is the Eggschange duo–together they sit across from the El Paso County Courthouse and visitors to the fixture can take a seat at their table to play a game of chess or checkers. The mastermind behind these artistic eggs, Kimber Fiebiger, saw her creations in their new permanent home on Tuesday morning, May 21.
When asked about her inspiration for the two, Fiebiger said, “I think it was just the interactive thing, that you could sit and be with them instead of just get a picture with them, that you can actually bring your checkers and sit down with them [or] play chess.”
The birth of the Humpty Dumpty sculptures came when the Minnesota artist did the Sculpture Exchange program in the early 2000s and the eggs ensnared the hearts of many.
“It was like the most popular thing in the Sculpture Exchange Program,” Fiebiger said. “So, it got purchased and then it kept winning like people’s favorite. The Norwood development said, ‘well, let’s have her make six more’ and they were really popular, so they said, ‘let’s have six more.'”
However, the original idea is thanks to Fiebiger’s son, who first requested the creation of nursery rhyme characters be brought to life.
“My son is 43, and when he was a two-year-old, he said, ‘Mommy, will you make me a Humpty Dumpty? And I made it.’ I took a real little chicken egg… and I made a tiny little one, so that was 41 years ago,” said Fiebiger.
Just like going on an easter egg hunt, residents and visitors of Colorado Springs have their own game to play: discovering more than a dozen Humpty Dumpties installed throughout the city.
“I think they add character to the city, and fun, especially for families that have kids,” said Sharla Crotone. “So, you get to associate with them immediately from like nursery rhymes, just like with my 4-year-old, he knew what they were.”
The newest batch of Humpties was delivered on Tuesday morning, weighing around 300 to 400 pounds. While they were not fully revealed, Fiebiger did share their identities, each with a distinctive personality.
“Well, there’s Robin Egg, Eggsplorer, Jammin Egg, Deviled Egg, Free Range Egg, and Eggspressionist,” teased Feibiger.
At 67 years old, Fiebiger shared there’s a lot more egg ideas in her head, and she has no plans of putting down the paint brush or her creativity any time soon. Next time you spot an egg, you might just be lucky to catch Kimber’s signature on it too.
