If you’ve got frozen spinach and/or frozen avocado in your freezer, take note: Two companies have just recalled these two items due to the dreaded listeria.

Sprouts Farmers Market recalled their 16 oz. bags of frozen cut leaf spinach with these UPC codes and use-by dates:

Sprouts Frozen Cut Leaf Spinach, 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500982, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21. Identifying information can be found on the back of the package.

Sprouts Frozen Organic Cut Leaf Spinach, 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500991, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21. Identifying information can be found on the back of the package.

This applies to you if you live in one of the states where this product was sold: Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

You should toss that bag if you have it or bring it to the grocery store where you got it for a full refund. Your salad isn’t safe yet, though. Nature’s Touch Frozen Foods Inc. says its “signature select avocado chunks” may have been contaminated with listeria, too. This applies to 12 oz. bags with the UPC 2113009412 and the best-by date 10/11/20, and these bags were sold in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, Texas, and Utah.

CNN reports that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 1,600 people become infected with listeria every year, and of those, 260 die. Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain-serious stuff, especially when you consider that babies, pregnant women, and the elderly have an even higher risk of getting listeria and suffering from its scarier effects.

Just in the past week or so, these frozen spinach and avocado recalls join flour, frozen berries, and Ragu pasta sauce. Yikes. Thankfully, there have been no illnesses linked to Sprouts Farmers Market’s spinach or Nature’s Touch’s avocado, but these are just two more reminders that we’ve got to be careful with what we eat.
