There Will Be a SpongeBob SquarePants Performance at This Year's Super Bowl
Many lovers of SpongeBob SquarePants remember the 2001 episode "Band Geeks," which featured a stadium rock performance regarded by some as the greatest musical number in animated TV history. Now, fans will get to relive that exhilarating moment on Feb. 11 with a special performance to kick off Super Bowl LVIII.
In the two-decade-old episode, SpongeBob and his friends form a marching band to prepare for an upcoming performance at the fictitious Bubble Bowl. The result was the Queen-esque track "Sweet Victory," which closed out the episode with a soaring rock song perfect for a stadium sporting event. The segment even featured footage of real-life football fans cheering and getting emotional.
For the first time ever, the Super Bowl will be broadcast live on Nickelodeon in addition to other platforms like CBS and Paramount+. To kick off Nickelodeon's coverage, the network is airing a new, reimagined version of the "Sweet Victory" performance. "Super Bowl LVIII Live From Bikini Bottom will feature a can’t-miss opening segment from Allegiant Stadium re-creating SpongeBob’s iconic 'Sweet Victory' performance," a press release for the event stated. But that's not all; there will be nods to Nickelodeon's characters and shows during the entire game.
According to Paramount, the broadcast will contain "hijinks throughout the game from fan-favorite villain Plankton; appearances from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; reimagined end zone cannons that fire slime, Krabby Patties, and pickles; undersea AR jellyfish within the stadium; slime trails and pineapples; and surprise appearances from beloved Nickelodeon characters in the crowd." There will be "one-of-a-kind content and Nick-themed elements throughout, including guest appearances, original on-field graphics, virtual filters, and more for kids and families," the company added.
