Spring cleaning? Here's how to make even the smallest space look super organized

When you walk into your space, does everything have a home? For us, the answer is yes, it belongs in the junk drawer. You know the one — there’s a pair of scissors that doesn’t quite fit in there and always jams the drawer to the point that you need to take the whole thing out.
Sure, you could go on living with that pair of scissors getting the drawer stuck, but if it makes your blood boil, it might be time to invest in some organization tools.
We consulted an expert — because only a seasoned pro can handle the junk drawer — to tackle spring cleaning and organization of all kinds. Darcy Miller is a party planner, author, and founding editor of Martha Stewart Weddings, and she’s made it her life’s work to surround herself with beautiful things — and she makes no exception for her studio space.
“When you’re in a small space you have to make the very most of every square inch, which you can see we’ve done in our studio,” Darcy tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I call this vertical organization, where you’re really using the wall to get as much in as possible.”
She’s not messing around when she says she uses every inch of space, either. “In the shelving, we use a lot of clear containers, and I love clear containers because you can really see what’s in there,” Darcy says. “It’s really easy to not only grab things but also know when you’re running out.”
For everything that doesn’t belong in a clear container — you know, the stuff that’s not quite as cute, Darcy has another solution. “It’s always nice to use one colored storage unit. Here we’ve used gray and we’ve got binders and boxes,” she says. “You have to really think about first, before you buy storage stuff, what do you have? For me, it was how are we gonna store the artwork and archive our artwork? So it was multiple binders, each labeled by category. And then for the stuff that isn’t as visual, it goes in matching gray boxes.”
“And then making the most of the space from literally the floor to the ceiling,” Darcy says. “Under the desk we have this cart from Amazon and it has drawers and it has casters too, so you can move it around.”
