Starbucks Is FINALLY Offering the Ingredient You've Been Waiting For
If you prefer to steer clear of dairy, you've been able to opt for soy milk at Starbucks since 1997, and the chain recently added coconut milk as an option, too. And now, lactose intolerant people everywhere can rejoice, because they're finally adding almond milk to the mix, too.
The dairy alternative will be available starting September 6 in more than 4,600 stores. At first, it will be restricted to the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, the Northeast, and the Mid-Atlantic regions, but then will expand nationwide by the end of the month. But it doesn't seem like it will be out near the dairy milks and sugars to go in your drip coffee, since the company emphasizes it will be available for use in "handcrafted beverages" at an extra cost of 60 cents.
Starbucks says they created their own "almondmilk recipe" that specifically goes well with hot drinks, iced drinks, and Frappucinos. It's unflavored, but apparently has a light almond taste. "It was designed so that when steamed, it creates a rich foam for hot beverages and is delicious and creamy when served in cold beverages," Yoke Wong, manager of Starbucks' research and development division, said in a statement. "The almond butter in our almondmilk adds body and complements the roasty notes of espresso."
Almond milk was one of the top customer suggestions posted on the My Starbucks Idea website, where it received more than 95,000 points. It has a different taste to it than soy milk, and lattes made with the stuff are delicious. An eight-ounce serving of Starbucks' almond milk only has three grams of sugar, compared with 12 or 13 grams of sugar in dairy milk. The Starbucks announcement did not include other nutrition facts.
So far, Twitter seems to be freaking out about the news, with customers saying they had been waiting forever for the addition. Get ready for lots of new custom drinks with almond milk as a key ingredient.
