Be Too Sweet

Risk a major sugar high in cotton-candy coats and skirts that look like confections.

GET TO KNOW: GEMMA CHAN

Plays: Astrid, the It Girl with a closet to die for

Previously seen in: AMC’s Humans, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

From: London

Astrid’s best quality: "What you see is not necessarily what you get with her. People make assumptions about her because her life seems perfect-she comes from a very privileged background. But she's still incredibly human, kind, and welcoming."

On getting to know Astrid: "There's a lot going on beneath the surface of Astrid-beneath those beautiful, fabulous designer clothes. I was raised not to be wasteful with things, so the idea of buying something to wear once and then never again-I can't imagine it! But I can't deny the wardrobe was incredibly exciting. I felt like Cinderella when I tried on her clothes for the first time."

On dressing to the nines: "Clothes aren't just a display of wealth with Astrid. They're an expression of her creativity, of who she is. She can turn up to a society wedding in a Zara dress and everyone's like, 'Who is this by?' It's the way she wears it and the way she carries herself. To me, that's inspiring."

On fashion risks: "I like to experiment-sometimes I want to be really feminine, and other times I want to be ore tomboyish or more androgynous. I love my sneakers, then sometimes I want to put on a fabulous dress. I'm not a slave to every trend."

Her current wardrobe fave: "My vintage Levi's overalls. They're so comfortable, and they go with everything."

Her must-have accessory: "A red lip will always elevate an outfit. You could be in something incredibly simple-a white blouse and jeans-but you add a red lip and suddenly you’re posh."

On breaking new ground: "There are so many characters in Crazy Rich Asians-no matter who you are, there will be someone in the movie that you can identify with. It shows that Asian culture is not homogenous. I'm so used to being not just the only Asian, but the only person of color on set. It felt so special to look around while making this movie and be able to talk to talented people from all over the world."

Rise and Shine

"Poshify" your basic pantsuit with metallic florals or oil-slick black with silver polish.

GET TO KNOW: SONOYA MIZUNO

Plays: Araminta, the bride with seven-figure taste

Previously seen in: La La Land, Ex Machina

From: London

Araminta’s best quality: "She's outlandish and over the top, but not in a superficial way. It's just that she feels everything one hundred and ten percent. A lot of Asian women are presented as submissive in film-Araminta is anything but submissive, and I love that."

Most prized wardrobe item: "My black Saint Laurent handbag. I bought it as a birthday gift for myself two years ago and I use it literally every day-it's the best because it's very practical but very chic. That and my Stella McCartney winter coat. But other than that I dress like a bum!"

Style icon: "My vibe is a bit boyish: rock shirts, trousers. I love Christy Turlington in the 80s and 90s. Classic."

On global style: "I've lived in a lot of places-London, Germany, Tokyo, Scotland, Ireland, Los Angeles, and New York. The fashion capitals I've lived in-Tokyo, London, and New York-have this stamp of coolness about them. But I've noticed that in big cities in general, people are just less afraid to be themselves when it comes to fashion."

On the impact of Crazy Rich Asians: "The cast has a WhatsApp chain, and we share all these amazing comments from Asians and Asian-Americans about how excited-and relieved, really-they are to finally see themselves onscreen. It's heartbreaking to think that for so long all of these people felt so underrepresented, and so bad about their place in the world. But this sudden feeling of enthusiasm-of being seen-is really, really exciting."

On making waves: "This is one of many, many stories that need to be told and will be told. It's just the beginning. Crazy Rich Asians has been compared to Black Panther, but I feel like that's a false equivalency. The idea that there's only this film for Asians and that film for African-Americans-it's so binary. I don't think it's like that at all. There should be and will be many films and many stories. Hopefully this just opens the floodgates."

Get Lit

Make opposites attract by pairing casual tees and sweatshirts with show-stopping sequins.

GET TO KNOW: AWKWAFINA

Plays: Peik Lin, the ride-or-die, give-no-effs best friend ever.

Previously seen in: Ocean’s 8, MTV’s Girl Code

From: New York City

Peik Lin’s best quality: "She has money, but none of the airs that come with it. She's down to earth and grounded, with a really big heart. She's completely selfless, and that makes her easy to identify with-everyone wants to be a good friend."

On the first viewing: "I went to a screening and I cried-at parts that weren't even meant for crying! It was incredibly emotional, but I couldn't put my finger on why. I talked to a lot of Asian-American women who saw it, and they also had this undeniable urge to cry. It's just so meaningful for us to see representation like that. It makes you feel some kinda way!"

Her style, in a nutshell: "It's somewhere between a vagrant and a shut-in. I wear a lot of Target pants. I love disguising Target pants as super chic couture pants."

On splurging: "The only time I feel comfortable spending money, and not like an Asian grandma about it, is when I spend it on shoes, jackets, and purses. I would never spend $2,000 on a blouse. Who even wears blouses? You can't leave a blouse to your grandkids, but you can leave them accessories. You can leave them an old-ass Louis."

The fanciest thing in her closet: "I bought a Gucci fanny pack when I was traveling through Europe. Then I got home and realized I looked like I was selling DVDs out of it. They're only cool in Europe. But my prized possession is a pair of Louis Vuitton Archlights-the platform sneakers. I wore those with my Target pants."

On her power uniform: "I was recently introduced to pantsuits, and I feel really great in them. When you're in a pantsuit, people are convinced that you're a confident, independent woman."

Awkwafina in three words: "Neurotic, high, and fun. All of those negate each other. It’s great."
