The Stars of "The Bold Type" Talk Living Like a Boss
If you’re not tuning in to the seriously addictive drama The Bold Type, let us direct you to Freeform immediately. The empowering series follows three twentysomethings as they navigate careers at top women’s magazine Scarlet (based on real-life glossy Cosmopolitan-former Cosmo editor-in-chief Joanna Coles is an executive producer on the show). Through all their ups and downs, from job insecurity to dating disasters to negotiating for higher pay, the crew stays tight and their friendship is always way more important than drama of the work or relationship variety.
In Seventeen’s August/September issue (on stands July 17), The Bold Type’s leading ladies-Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, and Meghann Fahy-open up about connecting to their alter-egos, their offscreen flaws and triumphs, and how to put together an outfit made for conquering the world.
Here's what they had to say:
Australian-born Aisha stars as Scarlet’s outspoken social-media director, Kat. Whether she’s fighting for the right to post a controversial story or questioning her sexuality, Kat never backs down from a challenge. “I’m inspired by Kat’s confidence, and the way she’s so fearless in love,” says Aisha.
What’s your best trait? And what’s your worst?“My best is my openness. I love living outside my comfort zone, and I’m always game to try something new. My worst is that I’m pretty much always running 10 minutes late. But at least I’m consistent!”
What’s your version of a power look? “A fresh pair of sneakers, and I’ll wear my hair down and all the way out!”
When it comes to your friendships, what’s the most important ingredient?“Honesty and a sense of humor. I can always trust my people to laugh and call me on my you know what!”
What’s your favorite way to get yourself out of a funk? “I’ll throw on a bop and dance it out. When life gets me down, music always picks me up again.”
Katie plays Jane, a writer who has her dream job at glamorous women’s magazine Scarlet. She quickly discovers that life inside the mag is way more complicated than you might guess from the look of its glossy pages. “Jane dreams big and always asks for what she wants,” says Katie. “I like to think I’m that way as well.”
What’s something you and Jane have in common?
“We’re both type A. Jane is way more cautious than I am, but I relate to her chronic overthinking.”
What role do you play in your group of friends?
“I’m the mom! I’m always down to sit on the couch and listen to my friends vent.”
When you’re having a low day, how do you give yourself a boost? “I try to think about myself in the way that I think about my friends. I’d never look at them and criticize their appearances, so I shouldn’t do that to myself.”
What do you wear when you want to feel like a boss? “I really like my legs, so when I show them off in a dress or a skirt, I feel confident and beautiful. Or my workout clothes, because wearing them usually means that I moved my body and took care of myself that day!”
Meghann’s alter ego is Sutton, the formerly timid fashion assistant. Though her character underwent a confidence makeover (and got a promotion), she’s still finding her voice. “She’s a people pleaser,” says Meghann. “But ultimately she’s loyal and loving.”
What outfit makes you feel like you can do anything?“Leather combat boots with jeans and a T-shirt!”
If you’re in a funk, how do you get yourself out of it? “First, I try not to be too judgmental of myself. I allow myself to have those feelings. And it sounds cheesy, but I write down one thing I’m grateful for. Perspective is everything!”
What quality in yourself do you appreciate the most? “My empathy is my best quality, but it’s also my worst. I always try to put myself in other people’s shoes. But sometimes when I think of how I’d handle a situation, it puts unrealistic expectations on the other person.”
Words to live by? Be where you are.
