You Can Stay Overnight in the 'Christmas Story' House This Holiday Season
Just imagine it for a moment: the sound of the crackling fire, the sight of snow flurries waltzing behind the window, the taste of warm eggnog, and the coziness of your family sitting beside your twinkling leg lamp.
For most of us, the holiday isn't complete without a re-watching of what is possibly the best Christmas movie of all time: A Christmas Story. During each annual viewing, we always wish we could just spend one night in that all-American home, so ordinary in its design and yet so extraordinary because of its special memories. And now that dream can finally come true.
The town in the film was based on Hammond, Indiana, where author Jean Shepherd grew up. But the 1983 movie was set and filmed mostly in Cleveland, Ohio, because it more accurately resembled an Indiana suburb in the 1940s, and because the local department store, Higbee's, allowed them to film there. In a cute coincidence, the house that Shepherd grew up in back in Indiana was actually located on Cleveland St., which seems like a good omen.
The famous house is located at 3159 W. 11th St., in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, and it's been operating public tours ever since it was restored to its movie glory back in 2006 (there's a museum with memorabilia from the film directly across the street as well). But now, guests can actually sleep at the abode, which can accommodate a family of six.
According to the website, you'd have private access to the third floor loft for the duration of your stay, and have the entire home all to yourself from an hour after it closes to the public until 9 a.m. the following day. Sleeping arrangements consist of "a queen bed, queen sleeper sofa and Ralphie and Randy's twin beds," and there's a living room, kitchen, and bathroom as well.
The rate for the chance to live out your favorite film starts at $395 per night, and varies with the season. Usually there are no minimum stay requirements, but during the holidays they ask for at least two days.
