Stay safe this 4th of July: Tips for handling fireworks, what the law says about their use

The 4th of July is almost here and this holiday is known for its massive displays of patriotism in the form of fireworks and parades and national pride. Here are a few 4th of July safety reminders.

What to know about firework handling?

  • A responsible adult should supervise all firework activity. Do not give fireworks to children.

  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.

  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.

  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.

  • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.

  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.

  • It is illegal to light fireworks under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • According to state law, on July 3 and July 4, fireworks can be used until midnight.

  • Fireworks on new years can be used until 1 a.m.

Please remember that firing a gun into the air in a celebratory fashion is against the law. Every year, there are reports about innocent people maimed or killed by stray bullets randomly shot into the sky. State and local codes and ordinances forbid this behavior, and those guilty are subject to prosecution.
