12 Trending Destinations to Visit in 2025: Must-See Locations for the Year Ahead
Discover the top destinations for 2025, from landmark anniversaries to new developments; these are the cities and countries to visit.
As a travel writer and content creator who has explored 77 countries (some with multiple repeat visits), authored 33 Lonely Planet travel guides, and spent time on six of the seven continents, my job is all about uncovering the most exciting, time-sensitive places to visit.
With 2-3 trips each month, I constantly seek out destinations that aren’t just beautiful but offer unique, timely experiences. Below are my 12 picks for where to travel in 2025.
1. Thailand
Thailand’s energy is unmatched. The country feels like a euphoric adrenaline rush that wakes all the senses, which I can never quite get enough of.
The buzz of Bangkok’s bustling night markets, where savory street food and eclectic finds beckon, contrasts with serene temple visits where monks’ chants echo through the air.
For those seeking adventure, the emerald-green islands of Phuket and Ko Samui, where The White Lotus season three, airing in 2025, was filmed, offer stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling or simply soaking up the sun.
And with a recent shift in laws, including cannabis and gay marriage, there’s even more reason to visit in 2025. Whether you’re in search of stunning scenery or diving into a dynamic cultural landscape, Thailand continues to captivate travelers worldwide.
2. Rome, Italy
2025 marks the Holy Year of Rome’s Jubilee, held only once every 25 years. The Italian capital will buzz with pilgrims and visitors, drawn by the sacred celebrations and the city’s ongoing renovations.
Expect major landmarks, including the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica, to shine brighter after receiving billions of euros in restoration funds.
But the "Eternal City" isn’t just about its ancient ruins and religious sites. Explore its lively neighborhoods like Monti, where quirky boutiques and trendy cafes mingle with the classical ambiance of Rome’s backstreets.
With a mix of sacred and modern, Rome is one of the most exciting European cities to visit in 2025. Book a tour with Access Italy, which offers bespoke, one-of-a-kind experiences around the city.
3. Greenland
Greenland is on the cusp of transformation in 2025 with the Nuuk Airport (GOH) expansion, which opens in November 2024.
This new terminal and longer runway will make the world’s largest island more accessible than ever, ushering in a new era of travel to Greenland.
United Airlines will launch direct flights from Newark to Nuuk starting in June 2025, and Scandinavian Airlines will add flights from Copenhagen, expanding Greenland’s reach to travelers worldwide.
Whether you're looking to experience the Northern Lights, explore colossal icebergs in Ilulissat, or hike through untouched landscapes, Greenland’s raw beauty makes it a truly unique destination in 2025.
4. Turks & Caicos
Turks & Caicos offers a sunny respite if you're considering relocating or escaping the US in the wake of elections, Turks & Caicos offers a sunny respite.
The islands are particularly appealing for those looking to invest in real estate, with the option to secure permanent residency by purchasing property. Stay at the Rock House, a stunning resort that feels like Capri without the crowds, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters reminiscent of the Maldives or Bora Bora, but with a shorter flight.
Dog lovers must visit Potcake Place, an adoption center for the island’s sweet stray dogs known as potcakes. You can take a homeless dog to the beach for a few hours most days.
5. Seattle, Washington
Seattle will be buzzing with new developments in 2025.
Pier 58, a revitalized waterfront space, is set to open in spring, featuring playgrounds, art installations, and expansive green areas for locals and tourists alike. The Cannonball Arts Center, a venue for contemporary art, will also debut in 2025.
Known for its vibrant music scene and bustling Pike Place Market, Seattle also boasts a growing food scene with Michelin-starred restaurants and quirky coffee shops.
Whether you're into outdoor adventures or urban exploration, Seattle promises a dynamic mix of culture, cuisine, and natural beauty. Stay at the gorgeous Fairmont Olympic Hotel, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2024.
6. Japan
With Osaka hosting Expo 2025 from April to October, Japan will be at the forefront of the global travel scene in 2025.
The Expo's theme—“Designing Future Society for Our Lives”—will showcase global innovations in sustainability and technology, drawing millions of visitors. Japan’s cities, like Osaka and Tokyo, blend ultra-modern and ancient traditions.
From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the tranquil temples of Kyoto, there’s something for every traveler.
2025 promises the added allure of the cherry blossom season coinciding with Expo events, offering a picturesque backdrop for exploring Japan’s innovative and cultural offerings.
7. South Africa
South Africa has long been one of my favorite countries. Its diverse landscapes, from the iconic beaches of the Garden Route to the rugged mountains of the Drakensberg and the wildflowers of Namaqualand, promise new experiences with every visit.
The country is ideal for both adventure seekers and culture lovers—whether you're looking for big cats on safari in Kruger National Park, learning about its complex history in Johannesburg, or soaking in the beauty of Cape Town, considered by many (myself included) to be the world’s most beautiful city.
In 2025, South Africa remains a must-see destination, offering a blend of nature, history, and city life that few other places can match.
8. Vietnam
Vietnam is celebrating 50 years since its reunification in 2025, and there’s no better time to explore this fast-evolving Southeast Asian country.
Expect a year full of parades, exhibitions, and festivals in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and beyond, commemorating its rich history and vibrant culture.
Whether you’re wandering through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, sampling ph? at a street stall, or taking a cruise around the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay, the energy of Vietnam is contagious.
9. Vilnius, Lithuania
Vilnius, Lithuania, will be the European Green Capital in 2025, making it an ideal destination for eco-conscious travelers.
The city is investing in sustainable urban development, from green spaces to eco-friendly transport options.
Explore its charming Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site full of cobbled streets, vibrant cafes, and intriguing history. Vilnius offers a perfect blend of culture and sustainability.
10. Nashville, Tennessee
Music lovers should flock to Nashville in 2025 to experience the 100th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry.
This milestone will be marked with special events, concerts, and exhibits celebrating the legacy of country music.
Whether you're into honky-tonks or sophisticated dining, Nashville's combination of Southern charm and modern flair will make 2025 the perfect time to visit this cultural hub.
11. Reykjavik, Iceland
Astronomers predict 2025 will be one of the best years for spotting the Northern Lights in Iceland. The planet will be approaching solar maximum this year, making Reykjavik the perfect home base for this natural wonder.
For travelers interested in adventure balanced with comfort, Iceland’s capital city offers a mix of spectacular sights and a welcoming atmosphere.
After a guided evening aurora tour, explore the city’s geothermal baths and unique restaurants, or venture out to nearby waterfalls and volcanoes.
With its cozy cafes and rich landscapes, Reykjavik boasts adventure and relaxation.
12. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon continues to rise in global popularity in 2025.
The city was named one of the best cities for singles to live comfortably in 2024, but its stunning architecture, vibrant nightlife, and rich history make it appealing to all types of travelers.
Whether exploring the historic Alfama district or enjoying seafood at a riverside restaurant, Lisbon promises a vibrant, more affordable experience than other EU countries.
