Where to stay on your trip to San Miguel de Allende
Check in to this exclusive six-room boutique hotel in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Arriving at the property's cobblestone street and slipping behind the discreet wood and brass-clad door felt like stepping into a hidden oasis turned art gallery. "This is the best hotel room I've ever seen," my boyfriend whispered as we entered our suite at La Valise San Miguel de Allende. Trying to maintain my composure, I was blown away.
Outside, a tranquil, sun-drenched courtyard beckoned, the gentle cascade of water into the pool immediately soothing my senses. Choosing this intimate yet impressive six-room boutique hotel in the heart of my my new favorite Mexican destination for a birthday getaway, generously gifted by my boyfriend, was a stroke of brilliance. Now, I confidently call it the most romantic hotel in all of Mexico.
Checking in
Tucked away behind an ochre-hued colonial fa?ade, and beyond an entrancing moon-shaped structure, La Valise emerges as a serene sanctuary amidst the city's lively pulse. At its heart, a contemplative zen garden unfolds with cascading greenery, a serene pool, and stunning art installations. Encircling this haven are La Valise’s six splendid suites, each crafted as a retreat of calm.
Thoughtfully appointed, every suite exudes its own magnetism, adorned with bespoke furnishings and carefully curated art pieces. The bathrooms are a standout, reminiscent of private spas with their elegant design and luxurious amenities.
On the rooftop, a gem awaits: a sun-drenched terrace with a large stone jacuzzi, inviting lounge chairs, and bistro tables. It quickly became our favorite spot to unwind, whether enjoying a peaceful read or savoring complimentary breakfast (my top pick: chilaquiles, coffee, and fresh pressed juice). Evenings were equally enchanting, spent playing cards and sipping in-house margaritas over candlelight while soaking in the breathtaking views.
The room
During my stay, the Genesis Suite left an indelible impression as one of the most memorable hotel room experiences we've ever enjoyed. It engaged all the senses: the lighting cast a romantic glow, the air carried a slight hint of luxury (maybe jasmine), and the sweet melody of birdsong filled the air, creating an ambiance that felt wonderfully exclusive, as though we were privy to a secret hideout.
Spanning nearly 700 square feet, the suite felt simultaneously spacious and inviting, all with thoughtful details that heightened its allure. The king-sized bed overlooked the pleasant courtyard, while the bathroom, fashioned from local stone, felt like our own private Mayan retreat.
The hallmark was the Mikveh-inspired bath, a nod to ancient purification rituals, offering a serene space of tranquility. The hallway leading to this oasis was mirrored and softy illuminated. Luxurious toiletries from Lordeanna gracing the bathroom, a feature that always speaks volumes to me when assessing a hotel's attention to comfort and luxury. My only regret was not indulging in an in-room massage for the ideal spa experience.
As I explored more of the property, I quickly realized that choosing any of the six suites would promise a beyond special stay, each offering its own distinct charm and comfort.
The neighborhood
The property's location is unmatched. Just steps away from The Parroquia and other stunning landmarks throughout the historic colonial district, chic boutiques, and some of the city's finest restaurants. San Miguel de Allende's charming cobblestone streets wind past ochre, rose, and toasted orange stucco facades, embellished with intricately carved wooden doors and beautiful bougainvillea vines. It's a city crafted for pedestrians, designed to showcase a symphony of architectural beauty.
Our days were spent eating our way through these captivating streets, exploring local shops, and enjoying a game of gin amidst the local gardens. For those seeking culinary and cultural delights, don't miss Lavanda Café for speciality coffee, Luma Rooftop at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende for sunset libations with breathtaking views, and La Posadita for a memorable dinner experience. Each spot captures the essence of San Miguel's vibrant and evolving character, effortlessly blending tradition with modern appeal.

Leaving this property was genuinely heart-wrenching for me. From arranging an exhilarating sunrise hot air balloon ride over Guanajuato to expertly recommending local restaurants and effortlessly crafting custom golden-hour cocktails, the staff's dedication knows no bounds. From an architectural and interior design perspective, the property is a masterpiece. Every detail is meticulously thought out, creating an ambiance that's both luxurious and warm.
