Stray Black Kitten Has Plenty To Say to Rescuers While He Eats His First Meal

Kitten season is the playful term that vets and animal rescue groups use to refer to the waves of stray kittens that tend to turn up in shelters after stray or feral cats go into heat and begin reproducing. Kitten season lasts from March until October and in warmer climates, cats can have up to two separate litters per year. That’s a lot of tiny mouths to feed (and find homes for).

This is why so many people are seeing little kittens appearing—seemingly from nowhere, and looking for help from people. The “cat distribution system” is a symptom of a larger problem. But when these adorable babies show up, most people still want to help.

This tiny black kitten appeared to a woman and her daughter in St. Petersburg, Florida right after Halloween, which you must admit is the most seasonable time of year for such an animal to arrive. The vet later told them that the little thing was only five or six weeks old—and if so, it’s had a difficult start to life, given the horrific double hurricanes that have rocked the St. Petersburg area in the last month. Perhaps why this little kitten was found alone on a patio, without his siblings or mother.

Regardless of how the kitten got there, he was certainly relieved to be fed and cared for, and had no reluctance to vocalize his appreciation. His tiny little dinosaur shrieks and grunts are truly adorable, so make sure you turn your sound up and listen to them.

Cat Vocalizations

Though cats are capable of making many different sounds, they are usually most vocal as kittens, when communicating with their kittens, and when communicating with humans. Mother cats communicate with their babies via chirps and trills, and kittens vocalize to get attention from their mom as well as to communicate their location.

The cat in this video has quite a lot to say. Even after getting the attention of the woman, he doesn’t shut up, and his little grumbles while attempting to crunch down the kibble are so endearing.

Proper Kitten Food

Because you can’t do anything nice on the internet without people complaining, plenty of people have come into the comments section to protest the fact that this minuscule kitten has been given dry kibble meant for an adult cat. But that’s what the woman had on hand and she was trying to do the best with what she had. She did go out and buy some proper wet food for the kitty later on, once she’d decided to keep him.

If you run across a kitten and all you have is dry cat food, don’t despair. Just add a little water to the kibble and mush it up the best you can. Though kittens like this need softer food for their little baby teeth, they’re probably more relieved to get something to eat at all. The old adage for mothers that “fed is best” applies here, too. That kitten was clearly starving.

But now he’s got a great home and is getting to know the lady’s other, adult cat. Her daughter, who has been sharing videos of the rescue, is sure that he’ll be very happy.

“This cat will have a wonderful home with my mom,” she says. “She’s literally ride or die for cats, so it’ll work out great.”
