Street to temporarily close starting Friday for 'Mural Marathon'
Apr. 17—Church Street between Walnut Avenue and Plumas Street in Yuba City will be closed from noon Friday until 6 p.m. on Sunday for the upcoming Yuba City Mural Marathon, Art and Health Festival, officials said.
According to the Yuba City Police Department, about 500 people are expected to take part in the event that will be open to the public.
Organizers said the festival will be a "three-ring circus of art, music, health, wellness, social awareness, and community." Over the three days, five professional mural artists will create murals on the side of the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts, located at 754 Plumas St.
Several musical acts are expected to perform on Saturday starting at noon in the parking lot at Church and Plumas streets, adjacent to the theater.
Also on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be "artists and craftspeople displaying their work for sale. To date, the list includes Mary Ann Nation, Miranda Rolfe, Sonja Christenson, Sinklair Art, Starberry Studio, Happy Paintings by Craig, and Roger That Bunny," organizers said.
"This civic beautification and education project is being made possible thanks to a major grant received by the Yuba-Sutter Rotary Night Club from the Upstate California Creative Corps," organizers said. "The project is a collaboration with the Yuba Sutter Rotary Night Club, the Blue Zones Project, the Partnership for Health, Equity and Inclusion, and Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture. The Mural Marathon is part of a larger statewide grant program to illuminate key themes including public health awareness, awareness of environment-related issues, civic engagement, social justice, and community engagement. The murals and adjacent festival address all these objectives."
