Strike a pose: Camp Palm Beach kids offer duct-tape take on fashion

Runway, shmunway.

Sure, during the season, Palm Beach plays host to any number of trunk and runway events from the biggest names in clothing. But could they stand up to the Funky Fashion show?

That was the creation of the 5- to 8-year-olds at Camp Palm Beach, who on Friday had the last day of their summer gathering at the Mandel Recreation Center. But not before presenting a look at couture July 10 that was inspired by the things that are sitting in everyone's junk drawer.

The tiny fashionistas fashioned fashions from humble garbage bags and duct tape: Skirts, shirts, extravagant neckwear and even the tail of a mermaid. They went for fashionable tape colors such as gold, silver, hot pink and neon green, and let their imaginations spill out like rolls of fabric in a Paris atelier.

And they couldn't resist busting moves, either, dancing and voguing in their tape-bedecked shoes and cheering each other on from the audience as they posed on runways made of blue mats. And this was all about high energy — no cool rollouts of a summer collection here.

Perhaps one or more of these campers will find their way to fashion when they get to be adults, and draw on the experience they had in the summer of 2024. And if a rising young designer makes brightly colored duct tape the fashion must-have of spring 2050, remember: You heard it here first.
