Student who ‘had nothing to give’ gifts teacher her Lucky Charms marshmallows in heartwarming post
A third-grade teacher from Washington state says that one particular gift she received from a student stands out this holiday season, and it’s reminding others on Facebook what the holidays are truly about.
Rachel Uretsky-Pratt shared a photo of a plastic bag full of Lucky Charms marshmallows — what is likely the favorite part of that breakfast cereal for a child — that she received from one of her students at Amistad Elementary in Kennewick, Wash. Although she, of course, treasures the gifts her students gave, which included chocolates and handwritten notes, these marshmallows moved her the most.
“You see, 100% of my school is on free/reduced lunch,” Uretsky-Pratt wrote. “They also get free breakfast at school every day of the school week. This kiddo wanted to get [me] something so badly, but had nothing to give.”
She continued: “So rather than give me nothing, this student opened up her free breakfast cereal this morning, took the packaging of her spork, straw, and napkin, and finally took the time to take every marshmallow out of her cereal to put in a bag — for me.”
The post has already been shared nearly 70,000 times, and it appears to have plucked the heartstrings of many commenters.
“This is such a beautiful gift her marshmallows when you think about how precious they are to children that’s the best part of their cereal,” wrote one person. “I am crying like a baby this is beautiful…… God bless her little heart..”
Another shared, “This story is a true meaning of Christmas!”
Uretsky-Pratt wrote: “Be grateful for what you have, and what others give you. It all truly comes from the deepest parts of their hearts.”
