Student-run ice cream center reopening for the summer in Hershey

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) — The Spartan Ice Cream Center is ready for another summer.

On June 27, the Milton Hershey School is reopening the Spartan Ice Cream Center on Thursdays and Fridays this summer from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Located near the Athletics field complex, the center serves two large scoops of ice cream in cups or cones for just $3.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, operations were limited during previous summers, however this year, the Center is back with a full staff and unique flavors, including Chocolate Palm Tree.

The difference between the Spartan Ice Cream Center and other shops: the operation is entirely student-run.

From ice-cream making and marketing to daily operations, inventory, and customer service, students who partake in the Milton Hershey Agricultural and Environmental Education program work at the Center over the summer.

“Pretty much all of our money goes back into the program, we don’t make too much profit,” Ice Cream Center Supervisor Kylinda Webb said. “We just try to keep the ice cream center open, to keep the community happy, to pay our student interns, and make sure they are all taken care of.”

Half-gallon jugs of ice cream are also sold year-round at Project Market on the Milton Hershey campus.
