Students respond to racist vandalism on dorm room door with messages of love: 'You SLAY girl!'
College students decorated a classmate’s dorm room door with inspiring messages after someone left her a racist note.
On Thursday, Yasmeen Duncan, a sophomore at Central Michigan University, tweeted a photo of a note that read, “F*** u monkey black whοres” scrawled on the whiteboard of her door.
“This was on the door to my dorm tonight,” Duncan tweeted Wednesday night. “My roommates and I (all black women) are okay, but of course, the police can do nothing but file a report. And of course, the officer we spoke to compared the hate of his badge to our blackness. What a night. We will not be silenced.”
Duncan did not respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment; however, she told student publication Central Michigan Life that she discovered the note after returning home from dinner. After taking a photo and erasing the message, Duncan called her roommates and met with the residence hall director.
On Thursday, university president Robert Davies and the university chapter of the NAACP issued statements. “I assure you racism, misogyny, bigotry and hatred will not be tolerated on this campus,” Davies wrote in an email, according to Central Michigan Life. “Many leaders, offices and teams across campus are involved in investigating this, determining our next steps and supporting those affected and our entire university community.”
The publication also stated that Central Michigan University’s Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity and campus police are conducting interviews and viewing security footage.
The police told the women that the note didn’t fit the description of a hate crime. “But just because it isn’t a crime doesn’t mean it’s OK,” chief William Yeagley told Central Michigan Life. “Somebody knows who did this and we need to hold (the perpetrator) accountable according to (CMU) policies.”
In the meantime, several students stepped up to support Duncan and her roommates. On Thursday, Duncan’s dorm room door was covered in encouraging sentiments such as, “You’re beautiful,” “Persist,” “Stay positive,” and “You are loved.”
Duncan thanked her circle of friends for their thoughtfulness. “I would first like to thank you all for the support and the love my roommates and I have received so far after the incident occurred last night,” she wrote on Facebook. “We are taking every action with the university, authorities, organizations, and community to handle this horrendous act and to awaken the Central Michigan University community.”
