A Stunning Master Bedroom Designed on a Six-Week Timeline
Happy Monday loves! Today feels extra Monday-ish, doesn't it? My brain is still feeling stuck in cozy-in-bed mode, so it's quite fitting that we're sharing a beautiful master bedroom from Rambling Renovators this morning. Designed in less than six weeks for the One Room Challenge this past spring, Jen made sure every corner was crafted with care and it results in a serene space anyone would want to settle in when the day is done. See the full layout altogether in the gallery captured by Will Fournier!
From Rambling Renovators... When we moved into this house just over a year and a half ago, I knew the master bedroom would be a space we would have to deal with quickly. The bold blue paint was not the least bit restful, the window shades did nothing to block out the light, and the patched nail holes left by the previous owner were not exactly the kind of decoration I hoped for. But life and other home projects got the best of us and the bedroom renovation quickly feel to the bottom of our list. So the room sat, with paint swatches on the wall, a terrible layout, and me and my husband increasingly grumpy from a restless night’s sleep.
Leave it to the One Room Challenge to get us in gear! Faced with a six week timeline and everyone watching, we were motivated to finally turn this awkward room into a serene and calming space. Our first challenge was creating a neutral foundation. Three of the walls and the ceiling were painted in Wimborne White, a warm white from Farrow & Ball, which instantly made the room feel lighter and brighter. One side of the ceiling was curved so painting the walls and ceiling the same colour helped detract attention from the awkward angles. We also painted the new closet and bathroom doors in the same white to make the room feel as expansive as possible.
We did give the closet a mini makeover as well and painted the inside an unexpected soft pink. The old bifold doors kept falling off their tracks so we were thrilled to replace them with wide passage doors from Metrie. The brushed brass levers from Emtek are the jewellry of the room – they catch your eye and are exquisite to the touch. The brass is repeated in the table lamps and leafy and bold chandelier and add that touch of glam to the master bedroom.
The layout of the room was another obstacle. Before, you walked into the room and were faced with a jumble of furniture surrounding the room’s largest window. I made the decision to put the bed in front of the window which would not only improve the flow of the room but create a focal point for the space. Our bed (purchased long before I planned out the space!) has a tall headboard so it does block out some of the light. I’m happy to report though that we do still get ample light from the side window and, having painted the back of the headboard white, you barely notice it when looking up at the bedroom from the street.
To balance the tall headboard, I framed the bed with gorgeous and textured plaid drapery from Tonic Living. I have an undying love for plaid and stripes and feel they are timeless and are a great way to keep a space from feeling too feminine. The black drapery hardware and black accessories scattered throughout the room help ground the airy palette. The wall opposite the bed was clad in a taupe patterned wallpaper, Aranami by Farrow & Ball. A minimalist, wintry photo by Gray Malin hangs above the dresser, continuing the neutral scheme and giving your eye a moment of rest. In the corner, I’ve tucked my makeup vanity. Surrounded by my favourite photos and pretty things, I can’t help but have a good start to my day!
