Suicide Squad director David Ayer is having the last laugh at fans who thought Jared Leto's Joker wasn't "comic book accurate."

On Thursday, June 4, one DC fan took to Twitter to share images of Leto's Joker side-by-side with various comic book and animated interpretations of the character, clearly demonstrating the inspiration for Ayer's design.

Leto's Clown Prince of Crime, who had a limited amount of screen time in the DC villain team-up movie, came with heavy bling and a number of visible tattoos on his face and body.

When this look was first revealed, fans were more than a little bit divided over his appearance.

However, it appears the look wasn't so radical after all, as Ayer quite clearly paid tribute to some classic material with his design for the character.

"Amazing. Tracks exactly with how I built the looks—'Not comic book accurate'," Ayer tweeted in response to the images, fittingly adding three crying laughing emojis.

This comes following calls for the release of the 'Ayer Cut' of Suicide Squad, after HBO Max announced it would be streaming the highly-anticipated Snyder Cut of Justice League.

While DC fans were successful in their #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, it seems unleashing Ayer's unedited version of Suicide Squad may be a little bit trickier.

"It is simply not my call or my IP," Ayer said in a response to a fan on Twitter. "I love WB— it's always been my 'home studio'. I fully respect and support the incredible path the DCU is taking under their stewardship.

"My cut of Suicide Squad may always be just a rumour. And that's just fine."
