This Sunscreen Is Being Recalled Because Of A Cancer-Causing Chemical
This story has been updated since it was originally posted on 08/08/2022 to reflect update to the recall
If you take measures to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, you may reach for some beloved Banana Boat brand products–but back in August, the Federal Drug Administration issued an announcement that three batches of the brand’s Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 sunscreen have been recalled due to trace amounts of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical. Yikes! Now one more lot number has been added to the recall list: 20301CF.
“While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the FDA’s announcement reads.

Although Banana Boat assures consumers that they have “not received any adverse events related to this recall” and “daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” it’s important to stay cautious and immediately discard products from the affected batches.
To find out if you have a recalled product, check the expiration date and lot codes at the bottom of the can. If your Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen SPF 30 expires in December 2022, February 2023, or April 2024, with a lot code of 20016AF, 20084BF, 21139AF, or recently announced lot number 20301CF it’s time to stop using it and throw it away.
Don’t worry about your other Banana Boat products, though. The release states that “no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.”
Luckily, the company will be issuing refunds to those who purchased affected canisters. If you have any questions, contact Edgewell Personal Care at 1-888-686-3988 or visit www.bananaboat.com.
