NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A Tulane University graduate is keeping things cool and sweet with his ice cream business, which is taking off all because of social media.

His business model is unique. Customers can only order online with a small window of opportunity to try the new flavors.

Before 33-year-old Briggs Barrios started making ice cream, he fell in love with ice cream.

“I loved ice cream when I was little. I’ve never been a snowball person. I know that might be a New Orleans bug-a-boo, but when we went to snowball stands when I was little, I used to only get soft serve cones,” Barrios said.

His love turned into reviewing ice cream on his Instagram page, “Cold Hard Scoop.”

“We have a lot of great ice cream in New Orleans, but not exactly what I was looking for, so I started making my own at the house,” he said.

Last June, this content creator turned into an ice cream creator with his new business, “Super Witch Ice Cream.” The business is named after his grandmother, Gladys, who he lovingly called “Super Witch.”

“She was always on my side and always on my corner,” he said.

Many more people are in his corner now. His ice cream is putting a spell on customers, bewitching them. His sales are so hot, while the ice cream is cold. His business model is unique. He only sells pints once a week.

“The amount I’m making right now is all quality every single time. I hand pack everything and put attention and detail into every pint of ice cream I make. Please bear with me. I’m trying to make as much ice cream that I can right now,” Barrios said.

The demand has grown significantly since he opened last summer.

“The first week, I did 180 pints, and this past week, I did 715 pints,” Barrios said.

If you’d like to get his ice cream, you need to order quickly.

Some of his recent flavors include: “Cookie Butter Cheesecake,” “Chocolate Chippy,” “Lick the Bowl,” “L.S.Ube,” “E.T. S’Mores” and “Cupid Truffle Shuffle.”

“I call them ‘drops.’ I make the ice cream flavors throughout the week, and they go on sale every Wednesday night,” he said.

“The last three to four weeks, I’ve been selling out in 10 to 15 seconds,” he said.

Customers can go to his website and sign up for text notifications, so they are notified when the ice cream will be available for purchase, and they will be able to see the menu.

“My flavors are nostalgic and familiar but presented in a way that you haven’t experienced before,” Barrios said.

His ice cream flavors change every week, and your only chance to get them is on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. through the “Hot Plate” website. For updates, check his Instagram page. Orders are available for pickup on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 5640 Jefferson Highway.
