'Supergirl' Star Laura Benanti’s Gorgeous Wedding Day Look

When Supergirl star Laura Benanti and Patrick Brown got engaged this past June, they posted a photo on Instagram with a quotation from poet Kahlil Gibran: “And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.” For Benanti, the quote captured her take on finding love again. “It was a sentiment that Patrick and I felt in that moment. This isn’t my first engagement or marriage, and it is Patrick’s. So for me, there’s a little bit of a different feeling to it,” Benanti tells Yahoo Beauty. “I feel like I know a lot more now than I did when I was younger. It sort of embodies the wisdom I have now versus what I didn’t have before.”
The wedding took place November 15 at New York City’s Riverside Church. Benanti celebrated the happy day with a few of her former co-stars, including Connie Britton and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The couple, who are both active on Instagram, used the hashtag #GetDownWithMrAndMrsBrown. Not afraid to gush about their love, Brown posted, “Today she becomes my wife. I’m super excited!” and Benanti posted pictures of the pair in ‘Hubby’ and ‘Wifey’ T-shirts.

To create her bridal beauty look, Benanti didn’t bring in a team, opting instead to keep it simple and do her makeup herself. “I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup, so for me, the lighter the better. Whenever I do events in the city, for the most part, I’m doing my own makeup. I tend to always like it a little bit better, I have to be honest,” admits Benanti. The time she’s spent on a variety of sets, from Nashville to The Good Wife, has given Benanti plenty of experience: “I probably pick up one, two tricks from each job.” For the wedding day makeup, Benanti’s staples were Dior BB Creme foundation, Burt’s Bees lip balm in Red Dahlia, and Tarte cheek stain in Tipsy. Her secret weapon? Beauty Eyecurl II, an electric curling iron for lashes. “It looks almost like a mascara wand, but it heats up. This way you’re not pulling out your lashes.”

For wedding day hair, Benanti relied on her friend and stylist Charles Baker Strahan. “She is one of the most kind-hearted, grounded human beings,” says Strahan of Benanti. Strahan worked with the bride to come up with a look that truly reflected her personality creating a style that is at once romantic and relaxed. “Especially for a wedding, you want the look to be really authentic,” explains Strahan. “Laura did her own makeup so she would look like herself. I think that sends a good message to other women. Your wedding should be about feeling comfortable and confident.”
With softer makeup, and the Anne Barge strapless lace dress as inspiration, Strahan and Benanti decided on soft, pretty waves paired with a delicate leaf-embellished hair accessory. To get the look, Strahan ran Herbal Essences mousse in wet hair twisting the hair to work in the product. “It gives strength and support but the hair still has movement to it.” He did a light blow-dry styling hair with hands to create a play on volume at the top of the head. He used a total of eight bobby pins secured by the leaf branch around the slight pouf. He let strands fall around the face keeping the look pretty and effortless.

For her wedding, Benanti felt strongly about focusing on the most important part of the whole event: her new husband. “I want to revel in the fact that I’m marrying this incredible man,” she said, “because he is the best man that I’ve ever met. He is so good and kind and loving.”
