Suranne Jones: ‘I’m away a lot, so playing Hot Wheels with my son is precious to me’
How do famous names spend their precious downtime? In our weekly My Saturday column, celebrities reveal their weekend virtues and vices. This week: Suranne Jones
7am
We may have a lie in because our son, who’s eight soon, will go downstairs to feed the dogs. We have two sausage dogs, Mickey and Chase, who are brothers. He lets them out and then upstairs to wreak havoc!
7.45am
My husband Laurence [Akers, who works in their joint production company] makes Joe Wicks’s overnight oats, or we might have an omelette. We try to be really good, although the croissants have snuck back in.
9am
I will do yoga at some point and we dog walk as a family, depending on how everyone is feeling. We go near where we live in north London, to Ally Pally or Highgate Woods.
11am
There is homework to be done. It’s all about negotiations. It is usually, ‘You can play Minecraft if you do this.’ I’m not good when I don’t have a routine.
12pm
There are an awful lot of children’s birthday parties at the moment – it could be rock climbing or football. We are still at the whole class [being invited] stage. I don’t often get to sit with all the parents, so it’s nice to catch up with them.
1.30pm
I’ll book lunch out – a pub or Pizza Express – because we like to sit down and have something special on a weekend. I’ve had gut issues since I was a child so I’m conscious to eat well – there are always veggies on the table. I also take Symprove [a water-based probiotic, for which Jones is an ambassador] on a daily basis. It was recommended to me by a make-up artist and really helps.
3.30pm
We try to do something away from the screen with our son. I will play Hot Wheels, Laurence will do Lego and Batman. I’m away a lot, so that time is precious to me.
6.30pm
Laurence makes a beautiful satay prawn sesame dish, which I adore. I don’t eat meat, the boys do, so fajitas is another good option for dinner. I don’t really drink, especially when I’m working, but over Christmas I had a couple of glasses of Champagne.
We sit around the telly to watch Gladiators or The Masked Singer. They’re not necessarily my cup of tea but watching them with our son is really good. Laurence and I are trying to do dates too. We are going to see Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in Plaza Suite. I can’t wait to see them both together.
9pm
Our son goes to bed and we will watch something like True Detective. Jodie Foster is brilliant. We watched all of The Morning Show and I was really sad when that finished.
10pm
I like to go to bed quite early because my work gets me up early. I’m currently working on three projects that I’m producing and acting in, all dramas. I’ve also got a documentary coming out about witchcraft and the history of the witch trials.
I do a lot of reading for work, so reading for relaxation isn’t hitting the spot at the minute. I listen to sleep stories on the Calm app or just put the rain or a thunderstorm on to send me off.
