Surfer Knocked Unconscious by Ditched Board at Mutant Slab Wave (clip)

Australian slab specialist, Kipp Caddy, just took one to the domepiece.

The New South Wales surfer was riding waves around home, after a stint in Indonesia and a few hectic sessions at Shipstern Bluff earlier this season, when he pulled into a cavernous pit, only to be whacked in the head by a ditched board mid-barrel.

And following the incident, it looks like Kipp will be drydocked for about two months.

Captioning the clip, showing the wave that caused the injury, Kipp wrote:

“After my stint in indo I came home and did a little mission down to one of my favourite waves. Unfortunately came undone, One of the lads who is an epic surfer got caught out of position and duck diving an 8.4 with that much volume its a near impossible task which resulted in a freak accident. The board connected with my head and knocked me unconscious for a brief period, I remember fighting back into consciousness and been really low on energy and just scratching to surface, the rest is a bit of blur.

“Thanks to the lads that were quick to respond and come to my aid. During the wipeout whilst I was unconscious I ended up putting a 30cm tear in my hamstring a pretty major injury I also picked up a hefty concussion that lasted a week but stoked my heads back to 100% I’m lucky to have Justin Lainge from @liveathletic_ep on my team along with Dr. Brandi Cole helping with rehab which I’m a month into. At this stage looks like I’ll be back surfing in around 8 weeks just in time to finish the year where I started in Hawii. I’m looking forward to pushing it harder on the rock this season.”

These days, increasingly, surfers have specialties with regards to wave variety.

There’s the big-wave persuasion, the small-wave high-performance crowd, the alternative novelty wave connoisseurs…

But recently, there’s an emerging new type of surfing specialist:

The slab surfer.

Nathan Florence is undeniably leading the charge in that department with his patented Slab Tour, but Kipp is not far behind – making freakish, below-sea-level waves his forte.

Here’s to a speedy recovery and more spine-tingling tubes for Kipp.
