The Surprising Connection Between 'Lawmen: Bass Reeves' and 'Yellowstone'
Taylor Sheridan is showing no signs of slowing down, and his stable of shows includes Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, and Tulsa King—and that’s without counting the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-led Yellowstone sequel series (presumably the now-announced show called 2024) and the 6666 Ranch show. The newest series in Sheridan’s universe is Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and the true story behind the show is just as riveting as the series itself.
David Oyelowo (an Academy Award nominee for his work in Selma) stars as Bass Reeves, a federal peace officer and the first Black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River that’s based in Arkansas and tasked with apprehending and capturing outlaws. In real life, Reeves had logged 3,000 arrests before retiring, and it’s believed that he was never wounded during his career.
Of course, one of the best things about Sheridan’s shows is the fact that many of them connect to each other. Yellowstone is set in the present day, while 1883 showcases the Dutton family in the 1880s right after the Civil War as they make their way across the country to Montana. 1923 follows another generation of the Duttons during the 1920s as they deal with Prohibition, the early stages of the Great Depression, and drought in Montana.
Fans are wondering where Lawmen: Bass Reeves fits into all of this, and there’s actually an easy answer to that question. Here’s what you need to know about the connection between Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Yellowstone.
Is Lawmen: Bass Reeves related to Yellowstone or 1883?
The short answer is no.
While Lawmen: Bass Reeves takes place in the 1880s like 1883, the new show isn’t part of the Yellowstone story. However, before it was decided that Lawmen: Bass Reeves would be a standalone series, it was believed to be a prequel to 1883.
Another reason why Lawmen: Bass Reeves isn't directly related to Yellowstone is the fact that it's actually an anthology series, so you can expect future iterations of the show to feature other iconic lawmen. What’s currently unknown right now is the title of the next season or the time period that it’ll focus on, but more information should be known soon.
