Survey Reveals Costco’s Most Popular Alcohol by State
A new Test Casinos survey has broken down the most popular alcohols at U.S. Costco locations according to state. The results were tabulated by analyzing American Google Trends data from 2019 until 2024 regarding 50 popular alcohols sold at Costco locations.
“We’re exploring the most popular Costco alcohols in each state, showcasing regional preferences for spirits, wines, and beers and local tastes and seasonal trends influence alcohol purchases,” the survey reads. “From budget-friendly options to premium classics, Costco’s liquor selection has something for every palate and occasion.”
The results have illuminated surprising facts about the spirit preferences of individual states. For example, Costco shoppers in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island were found to prefer whiskey above all. Alabama favors Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey, while Colorado and Massachusetts are happy with Costco’s in-house brand, the Kirkland Signature 12-Year Blended Scotch.
Residents in Arizona, California, Missouri, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, meanwhile, preferred vodka. Arizona, Missouri, and Wisconsin prefer Kirkland Signature French Vodka; and New Jersey favors Kirkland Signature American Vodka. Californians, on the other hand, go for Smirnoff.
States such as Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, and New York were found to prefer various types of wine. In a couple of surprising twists, the favorite Costco spirit of Texas was found to be Kahlua Coffee Liqueur. Louisiana and Maine also enjoy the sweet stuff, it turns out. Costco shoppers there enjoy Disaronno Originale Amaretto.
The survey also determined state-favorite liquors, with whiskey coming out on top in many territories. Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey, Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch, and Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch Whiskey were the favored drinks in several states.
It was also found that Idaho and Utah appreciate a classic dry gin, while Costco shoppers in Georgia and Illinois enjoy Captain Morgan Spiced Rum.
As for shoppers’ preference for Kirkland brand spirits, Test Casinos rightly pointed out: “Kirkland Signature brand of spirits are known to rival or even beat top-shelf competitors that typically sell at a much higher price, making it a secret one-stop-shop for those who imbibe on a regular basis.”
