Suzanne Somers Suffers Health Scare Leading Husband Alan Hamel to Call 911

Suzanne Somers and her husband, Alan Hamel, are opening up about a health scare that recently led them to call emergency services—and the moment's comedic aftermath.

The two were at home in Palm Springs when the incident occurred. The Step by Step alum, 76, and the TV host, 87, were checking each other's blood pressure—as they do every day—when Hamel grew concerned over the reading he was getting for Somers.

"After I took eight or 10 readings on our blood pressure machine and kept seeing terrible results for Suzanne‘s blood pressure, I called 911," Hamel told Fox News.

It was the first time they ever called 911, the actress told Page Six. Neither divulged the numbers that rang the alarm bell, but, according to the Mayo Clinic, a reading of 180/120 or higher is cause to seek medical attention.

Hamel was pleasantly surprised by how quickly help arrived. "Almost within a couple of minutes of hanging up with the dispatcher who answered the 911 call the firemen were coming through our front door and within a couple of minutes of that happening the ambulance crew arrived," he said, calling back to "terrible stories" of help being called for and taking over an hour to arrive—if it ever does at all.

But when the first responders hooked Somers up to their own monitors, her blood pressure was totally normal. "They...quickly announced she’s just fine," he continued.  Somers clarified to Page Six that their home monitor had become faulty.

Both were incredibly grateful to the fire department. "They also asked if there was anything else we could do other than cooking dinner. They had done us an amazing favor for which we will be forever grateful," Hamel said, while Somers sent "a big kiss and big hugs" their way.

It's understandable that Hamel would be quick to call for help, as Somers recently revealed that her breast cancer had returned. "As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down," she shared earlier this month, confirming that she's "a fighter."
