The good news? There is now a free, we repeat free, downloadable iTunes app called Swivel Beauty that puts the hair needs of women of color first.
Like finding an insanely awesome restaurant on Yelp, Swivel Beauty allows you to search for local salons that cater to textured hair types. “There are more than a dozen beauty booking apps available in the Apple store, and very few of them really consider the hair needs of black women in a truly authentic way — most don’t even include salons that can do our hair,” Swivel Beauty co-founder Jihan Thompson told Yahoo Beauty.

With that exact notion in mind, the downloadable app was carefully created with the needs of women that have textured hair at the forefront. It is very user-friendly, and you can easily select your desired service and exact hair type (natural kinky, straight natural, relaxed, locs, etc.) by choosing from the homepage drop-down menus. From there, you have access to everything you need to know about the best of the best stylists and salons available to help you achieve all your #hairgoals. Plus, you can easily book online. Double win!
If you are worried about credibility, fear not. All the salons featured have been tried, tested, expertly rated, and approved. “For the last year, we’ve been building strong relationships with stylists and salons throughout the NYC area that have come to us based on trusted reviews from our networks, as well as the beauty blogger community. We’ve done quite a bit of trial and error, too,” says Thompson.
Swivel Beauty currently has listings primarily in NYC but will be expanding very soon. Additionally, Android users can get ready to join in on the fun, as an iOS version is under way! Stay tuned.
