Sydney Sweeney says her role on 'Euphoria' has allowed her to 'become very confident with my body'

Sydney Sweeney is reflecting on how portraying Cassie Howard on Euphoria has affected her relationship with her own body.

"I’ve weirdly become very confident with my body through Cassie," the 24-year-old told fellow actress Christina Ricci for Variety.

While the two talked about their own experiences with on-camera nudity and intimacy, Sweeney had nothing but fond experiences to share. "It’s a very safe environment," she said. "I’m very fortunate that I am coming up during a time where there is so much thought in this process and we now have intimacy coordinators."

Ricci, 42, who has been in the spotlight a while longer that Sweeney affirmed that she hadn't yet worked with a specialist on those types of scenes. Sweeney, however, explained how the process has made the work more comfortable and consensual.

"It’s really interesting because it’s kind of like a stunt coordinator for a sex scene. Like they bring in tools and choreograph a whole thing. Sometimes there’s yoga mats that you can put in between each other or there’s like pads or yoga blocks. There’s some weird stuff," she continued. "They come into your trailer and talk to you one-on-one and even if you have agreed to something, they ask you on the spot on the day, 'Did you change your mind? Because you can.' And then instead of you having to, if you feel uncomfortable talking to the director, they’ll be your voice for you. It’s a really cool dynamic, and they’re on set with you and they make sure that you’ve got some mint and some gum."

While there were previously rumors claiming that Sweeney had asked the show's director Sam Levinson to cut some of her nude scenes from the script, the actress later clarified her comments. "I never asked him to cut any scenes," she told Teen Vogue, sharing that she meant to illustrate "how respectful Sam is and how incredible of a director he is, that he would never make me do something I didn't feel comfortable with."

In fact, Sweeney told Ricci that she's more critical of how her body is discussed by audiences and the media, sharing that they're seemingly missing the point of Cassie's narrative.

"It’s a form of communication for her," Sweeney says of Cassie's intimate scenes. "There was a story line of what is happening to Cassie and the sexualization that’s happening to Cassie because of her nude photos that got leaked and just the perception of others on her because she has boobs. And then I see that happening to me in real life, even though everyone watched Euphoria. I go, 'Did you not learn?'"

Sweeney's previously made a point about female actresses in particular not being taken seriously as a result of performing nude or topless scenes.

"There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work. But the moment a woman does it, it degrades them," she told Cosmopolitan. "There’s such a double standard, and I really hope I can have a little part in changing that."
