Sydney Sweeney Shares a Video of Her Being Bitten by a 'Trained' Spider While Filming 'Anyone But You' in Australia
Things got a little too real for Sydney Sweeney while filming the upcoming rom-com Anyone but You, which premieres later this month on Dec. 22. The 26-year-old actress was bit by a real-life "trained" huntsman spider while filming a scene in Australia, where the movie is also set. And the whole thing was caught in an outtake that she brought during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week.
As Sweeney explains earlier in the video, local Aussies will warn Americans that "everything can kill you" in the land down under, so much that you have to shake your shoes before putting them on to make sure there's no eight-legged creepy crawly lurking. But the last thing she was probably expecting was to meet the business end of a spider while actually on-camera.
In the film, Sweeney stars opposite Glen Powell as two former lovers turned enemies who have to play a couple while attending a destination wedding. At one point, while putting on a show for her character's family, the Euphoria star puts her hand down the back of her supposed-boyfriend's shorts, and produces the hand-sized arachnid.
"So we're filming, and then the thing starts biting me," she told Fallon. "But we're in the middle of a scene and I'm supposed to be screaming, but then my screaming got a little serious."
"They thought I was making really serious dramatic choices in a rom-com ... So no one cut!" Sweeney continued. "So I'm just standing there with this spider on my arm biting me, and I'm screaming, and just everyone's watching. Glen was the only one who was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, I think this is a little real.'"
For any arachnophobes out there, the below clip is certainly not for the faint of heart.
Thankfully, Sweeney was not seriously harmed by the spider. However, the on-set medic had to write up the incident in a report, which read: "Sydney Sweeney (cast department), bitten by a spider, now Spider-Woman." Coincidentally enough, she says that no one in the crew knew that she was filming Marvel's upcoming Madame Web, which hits theaters next year, in which she actually plays Spider-Woman.
Talk about going method for a role. You can watch Sweeney's conversation with Fallon, which incudes both the unfortunate outtake and the finished scene, below.
