Sydney Sweeney to Star in and Executive Produce Sony Pictures New 'Barbarella' Film

Sydney Sweeney is making moves in Hollywood. She is officially set forward plans to star in and executive produce Sony Pictures' upcoming Barbarella film.

While the project is currently in the very early stages of development, the young star took to Instagram recently to confirm the news. Sweeney posted an image of the original artwork from the 1968 space opera along with the caption, "time to save the universe." In the original film, Jane Fonda played the role of Barbarella. The film was adapted by French writer and illustrator Jean-Claud Forest's comic series surrounding a space-traveling heroine. At the time, it was not considered a box office hit, however, in the decades after, it has developed its own cult following.

Sweeney and Sony Pictures have previously partnered with one another for Madame Web. The actress starred alongside Dakota Johnson and is also gearing up for her next Sony picture, The Registration, an adaptation of Madison Lawson's thriller of the same name.

There is currently no news on the production timeline of Barbarella just yet.
