SZA & Kendrick Lamar Won't Perform "All the Stars" at the Oscars
Movie fans are understandably excited to see live performances of this year's Best Original Song nominees when the Oscars take place on Sunday, February 24. But two performers who won't be performing at the 2019 Oscars-despite their nomination in the Best Original Song category-are SZA and Kendrick Lamar. Here's what we know about the Black Panther musicians missing the iconic event.
SZA and Kendrick Lamar won't perform at the Oscars because of "logistics and timing."
According to Variety, SZA and Kendrick Lamar won't take the stage at the Oscars 2019. A source tells the publication that the reason is down to "logistics and timing," although there are no further specifics. It's also worth noting that Lamar and SZA didn't perform at the Grammys this year either, despite "All the Stars" being nominated in several major categories including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Their song also won't be performed by anyone else at the ceremony.
"All the Stars" is the only Original Song nominee that won't be performed.
The other four nominees in the Best Original Song category will all be performed at the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 24. The nominees include "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings," to be performed by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs; "I’ll Fight," performed by Jennifer Hudson, from RBG; "Shallow," performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, from A Star Is Born; and "The Place Where Lost Things Go," to be performed by Bette Midler, from Mary Poppins Returns.
Rolling Stone reports that Queen and Adam Lambert will also perform during the broadcast, as the band's Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody starring Rami Malek, is nominated for a slew of awards.
The duo was one of the first acts slated to perform at the Oscars.
Back in January 2019, something of a furor started when it was announced that only two Best Original Song nominees would be performed on Oscar night-"Shallow" and "All the Stars." However, this plan was so unpopular with the general public, the Academy soon released a statement via Variety revealing that all five nominees would now be performed, each in a "truncated, 90-second" format.
However, it appears as though SZA and Lamar couldn't fit the performance into their schedules. They will definitely be missed, especially as the music from Black Panther has been such a huge hit.
