From Hollywood to the art world, these 50 multigenerational American families are determining what you see, hear, consume, and collect.
JONES
Rashida Jones found the perfect subject for her first outing as a documentary filmmaker: She made this year’s Quincy about her dad, the music and movie producer Quincy Jones, who has won 27 Grammys and has lived nearly as many lives. But she had options-other relatives include actresses Peggy Lipton and Nastassja Kinski, record producer Quincy III, actress Kidada, and model Kenya Kinski-Jones.
BERGGRUEN
The late Heinz Berggruen sold 165 works of art to the German government to found Berlin’s Berggruen Museum. His offspring are equally inspired: John is a San Francisco art dealer; Helen, a painter; Olivier, an art historian; and Nicolas, founder of the Berggruen Institute, an L.A.-based think tank.
TANG
Financier Oscar Tang is on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Philharmonic and has funded art programs at Andover, UC Berkeley, and several Ivy League schools. His wife, archaeologist Agnes Hsu-Tang, is known for her documentary series Mysteries of China. Daughters Tracy Tang Limpe and Dana are, respectively, a philanthropist and an architect.
BLACK
Private equity boss Leon Black and wife Debra, a Broadway producer whose credits include August: Osage County, are major art collectors-they own Edvard Munch’s The Scream. This year Leon, whose mother Shirley Lubell was an artist, became chair of MoMA’s board of trustees.
THOMAS
Hank Willis Thomas is the 2018 Guggenheim fellow who founded For Freedoms, an artist-run super PAC that recently completed a $1.5 million round of fundraising. Among his supporters: mom Deborah Willis, the chair of NYU’s photography department; dad Hank Thomas, a film producer; and wife Rujeko Hockley, a curator at the Whitney Museum.
CLEMENTE
Francesco Clemente, the acclaimed multidisciplinary artist, has upcoming shows at the Brant Foundation and Dallas Contemporary. Wife Alba is a noted costume and set designer-and muse, having been immortalized by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Alex Katz. Daughters are filmmaker Chiara and chef Nina.
CISNEROS
Few collectors have done more for Latin American art in the U.S. than Gustavo Cisneros and wife Patricia Phelps, whose foundation made a donation in January of more than 200 works to six international museums. Daughter Adriana is president of the family foundation.
ALLEN/RASHAD
Sisters Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad are legends of stage and screen, and they've passed their talent on to the next generation. Rashad's daughter Condola is a four-time Tony Award nominee and stars on the series Billions, while Allen's daughter Vivian Nixon is an actor, dancer, and Broadway veteran.
COPPOLA
Francis Ford Coppola is the patriarch of a great American film dynasty. Wife Eleanor is a documentarian, daughter Sofia is a director and writer, and son Roman is a writer and producer. And let’s not forget sister Talia Shire, actor nephews Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage, or director granddaughter Gia Coppola.
LAUDER
Leonard Lauder, chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder companies, has pledged his Cubist art (valued at more than $1 billion) to the Met. Wife Judy is a photographer, and brother Ronald founded the Neue Galerie in New York; his collection includes a $135 million Klimt. Ronald’s daughters Jane and Aerin are executives at Estée Lauder, where Aerin also helms her lifestyle brand.
ROSS
It’s no surprise that music legend Diana Ross has an incredibly talented family. Her five children include singer Rhonda Ross Kendrick (whose dad is Motown founder Berry Gordy), award-winning actress Tracee Ellis Ross, and musician Evan Ross, who is married to singer Ashlee Simpson. Note how they all use mom’s surname.
FISHER
Doris Fisher co-founded the Gap with her late husband, Donald, but they started a world class art collection, too. Now their treasures are on view at SFMoMA-where they served on the board of trustees and where, just as in the family business, eldest son Robert is now chairman of the board.
DUNNE
Joan Didion doesn’t just write great characters, she’s related to them. Her late husband, John Gregory Dunne, and his brother Dominick were writers, and Dominick’s son Griffin is an actor and director (and father of actress Hannah). Griffin, with his cousin Annabelle Dunne, made last year’s doc about Aunt Joan.
DE MENIL
The Menil Collection in Houston was founded by French philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil. They had five children, including film producer Fran?ois, photographer Adelaide, Dia co-founder Philippa, and jewelry designer Christophe (right), who is the grandmother of Max Snow, a successful artist, and his sister Caroline (left), an actress.
DAY-LEWIS
Rebecca Miller, daughter of playwright Arthur Miller and photographer Inge Morath, is a novelist and the filmmaker behind movies like Maggie’s Plan. Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis is her husband, and they have three sons, including model and musician Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis.
Lauren
Ralph and Ricky Lauren aren't iconic only for their contributions to fashion-which are notable enough-but also business, philanthropy, and beyond. Their brood is equally committed: daughter Dylan is an entrepreneur, son Andrew is a film producer, and son David works for the family business. And all of them seem firmly invested in the family's commitment to American style.
ELGORT
Arthur Elgort, the venerable photographer, and his wife Grethe Holby, a producer and dramaturge, have passed on their talents to son Warren and daughter Sophie, both successful photographers (and T&C contributors), as well as their youngest, Ansel, who is an actor and a musician.
DE LA CRUZ
Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz house their contemporary art collection in a 30,000-square-foot private museum in Miami that is free and open to the public. In August their son Alberto and his wife Maria replicated his parents’ model with the Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery at Georgetown University.
CROWN
Chicago industrialist Henry Crown’s heirs back many arts projects, like Crown Fountain in Chicago’s Millennium Park, funded by son Lester. Grandson Steven is a trustee of the city’s Art Institute, and his brother James is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. James’s wife Paula is a banker-turned-artist.
LOUIS-DREYFUS
The most famous Louis-Dreyfus is Julia, soon to return for the final season of Veep. Her father, the late billionaire William, bequeathed his collection of unheralded masters to his art foundation, which will donate proceeds from sales to the Harlem Children’s Zone. Julia is married to actor, producer, and writer Brad Hall.
GUMMER
Meryl Streep is one of the world’s most lauded performers, but her greatest role just might be as mother. She and her sculptor husband Don Gummer have raised a talented brood, including musician Henry Wolfe, model Louisa Gummer, and the spitting-image-of-mom actors Mamie and Grace Gummer.
GELB
Late New York Times editor Arthur Gelb and his journalist wife Barbara, who died last year, wrote three biographies of Eugene O’Neill, and the showbiz bug never left the family. Their son Peter, an award-winning producer, is the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, and his sons David and Matthew are filmmakers.
JUDD
Nearly 25 years after Donald Judd died, the foundation that bears his name is led by children Rainer (president) and Flavin (artistic director) to preserve his legacy in New York City and Marfa, Texas, and to cultivate his influence through contemporary collaborations, such as one with Tomas Maier earlier this year.
DE GUNZBURG
Collectors Nathalie and Charles de Gunz-burg’s influence stretches from NYC-he’s a trustee of the Jewish Museum; she’s on MoMA’s International Council-to Utah, where Dia Art Foundation, whose board she chairs, shows Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty. Daughter Laura works at the Cultivist, a private arts club.
HOFFMAN
Hannah Hoffman, wife of designer Jonathan Olivares, runs a top L.A. gallery. No surprise: Her father was National Lampoon co-founder Robert, whose wife Marguerite has pledged their huge collection to the Dallas Museum of Art.
GLIMCHER
Art dealer Arne Glimcher founded Pace Gallery in 1960, and today his family-including wife Milly, an art historian, and son Marc, Pace’s president-has outposts worldwide and represents artists including David Hockney and Maya Lin. Pace will open a new 70,000-square-foot flagship gallery in Manhattan next fall.
KASMIN
Paul Kasmin, who represents Tina Barney and Robert Motherwell, is opening his fourth NYC gallery this fall, along the High Line. The megadealer learned the trade from dad John, who ran a seminal 1960s London gallery with clients including the Rolling Stones.
SPIELBERG
Filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who is currently remaking West Side Story, has an impressive supporting cast. He’s married to actress Kate Capshaw, and their brood includes actress Jessica Capshaw, musicians Theo and Sasha, producer Sawyer, and model Destry Allyn.
GUND
Agnes Gund is one of the major arts patrons of our time, but she’s not alone. Her brothers Graham, Gordon, and Geoffrey are philanthropists for causes including the Cleveland Museum of Art; sister Louise is an award-winning -theater producer; and daughter Catherine is an Emmy-nominated producer and director.
HAAS
Designers Nikolai and Simon Haas are known for furniture that looks ripped from the pages of Maurice Sendak. Their ingenuity can be traced to their wildly creative upbringing with opera-singer-turned-screenwriter mom Emily Tracy, painter and furniture maker dad Berthold, and actor brother Lukas.
NELSON
Country legend and agricultural enthusiast Willie Nelson is, at 85, still touring; he recently released his 73rd studio album. That ethic has rubbed off on his kids-he has six-including son Lukas, who plays guitar for Neil Young and wrote music for the recent A Star Is Born reboot, and Micah, a musician and artist.
SMITH
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are multihyphenate Hollywood moguls, but they’re also raising a second generation of impressive talent. Son Jaden is a model and actor-he appeared in this year’s Skate Kitchen-and daughter Willow is a musician who is reportedly collaborating on new music with her mom.
Yurman
While the design-based jewelry company bares David Yurman's name, his entire family is blessed with creative instincts. David's wife (and the company's chief brand officer) Sybil is a painter, son Evan is chief creative officer as well as a trained blacksmith and former artist's studio manager, and Evan's wife Ku-Ling is a filmmaker. Next up: David and Sybil's grandchildren, who-while still quite young-have already displayed some of the family's trademark affinity for creative work.
BLUM
Superproducer Jason Blum might have made his name with horror movies like Halloween and Get Out and TV projects like The Jinx, but he's got fine art in his genes. His parents, Irving Blum and Shirley Neilson, founded the influential Ferus art gallery, which represented the likes of Andy Warhol.
Marden
Painters Brice and Helen Marden are among the art world's most respected couples, but their creativity doesn't stop at the edge of a canvas. The pair also helms two small inns-one in upstate New York, the other on the Caribbean island of Nevis. Both pursuits run in the family. Daughter Mirabelle is an artist, and daughter Melia is a chef and cookbook author.
LINDEMANN
Late billionaire George Lindemann and wife Frayda were both VPs of the Metropolitan Opera. Older son Adam is a writer and gallerist; his wife Amalia Dayan co-founded the gallery Luxembourg & Dayan. Younger son George Jr. is president of Miami’s Bass Museum.
PLATT
Ambassador Nicholas Platt served as a top diplomat around the globe, and also ran New York’s Asia Society. One son, Oliver, is an Emmy- and Golden Globe–nominated actor who plays a pope in the upcoming film Emperor, and the other, Adam, is New York magazine’s restaurant critic.
PATRICOF
Billionaire investor Alan Patricof was a founder of New York magazine. Son Jamie is a producer behind films like Big Eyes and Blue Valentine. Other son Jon helped develop the Tribeca Film Festival, which was co-founded by Alan’s brother-in-law Craig Hatkoff.
SACKLER
The name-made famous by brother physicians Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond Sackler-is now associated with the opioid epidemic, but the family have long been generous art donors, with dozens of wings-from the Met to the -Louvre-bearing their name.
ROTH
If Jordan Roth is Broadway’s most exciting producer-with shows like Springsteen on Broadway and the new Torch Song-he learned from Tony-winning mom Daryl, the force behind Hello, Dolly! and the upcoming Gloria. Business acumen may have come via real estate titan dad Steven. Sister Amanda is an author.
WASHINGTON
Musician Pauletta and her husband Denzel are parents of: actor John David, who had a breakout year with BlacK kKlansman and Monsters and Men; Olivia, who stars in the upcoming In Reality; Katia, who has worked behind the scenes on such films as Django Unchained; and Malcolm, who is currently directing a TV series.
RONSON
Jeweler Ann Dexter-Jones’s kids with band manager Laurence Ronson include musician Mark Ronson, DJ Samantha Ronson, and fashion designer Charlotte Ronson. With her second husband, rocker Mick Jones, she has two kids: actress and director Annabelle Dexter-Jones and musician Alexander Dexter-Jones.
RUDIN
Beth Rudin DeWoody, a member of NYC’s Rudin real estate dynasty, sits on the board of the Whitney and opened the Bunker Artspace in West Palm Beach last year to exhibit her trove of contemporary art. Daughter Kyle is a curator, and son Carlton co-founded design studio Reunion Goods & Services.
NAUMAN
Bruce Nauman, a veteran of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people list, will be the toast of the art world when a career retrospective opens October 21 at MoMA. His wife is the painter Susan Rothenberg, and the extended family includes jeweler Maggie Trakas and photographer Zoe Nauman.
SCHNABEL
Julian Schnabel made it big in the ’80s, but he hasn’t slowed down. He was the subject of a recent show at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor, and his new movie, At Eternity’s Gate, opens this fall. His offspring inherited that stamina: Vito is an art dealer with galleries in New York and St. Moritz, Stella is an actress and writer, and Lola is a painter and photographer.
PLATT
The Platts command the screen and the stage: Producer Marc received Academy Award noms for La La Land and Bridge of Spies, while two of his sons are accomplished actors. Jonah’s résumé includes Curb Your Enthusiasm, while Ben, known for his role in Dear Evan Hansen, will star in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series The Politician.
ZWIRNER
David Zwirner is a formidable global art dealer, with galleries in New York and London (and a five-story space by Renzo Piano underway in Chelsea). Wife Monica Seeman founded and designs for accessories company MZ Wallace. Children Marlene and Lucas have joined the gallery.
SIMON
Paul Simon’s greatest artistic collaboration wasn’t with Art Garfunkel. In fact, Simon-who’s on a farewell tour this year-and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, have created quite the family band: Kids Harper, Lulu Belle, and Adrian are all musicians who will keep the family name in lights after dad retires.
RACHOFSKY
The Richard Meier–designed Dallas home of collectors Howard and Cindy Rachofsky was, for a time, open to the public. The Rachofskys still keep patronage personal, hosting TWO x TWO for amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art, to which they have pledged their haul. Daughter Meghan is a collector and model.
NEIDICH
Collectors and patrons Brooke Garber Neidich and -Daniel -Neidich provided major support for the Whitney’s David Wojnarowicz retrospective, including lending pieces from their own collection. Son Jon, a restaurateur, is on the board of NYC public arts nonprofit Creative Time, and son Stephen is an artist working in L.A.
