Of all the things I thought would be on my 2021 bingo card, getting into Kim Kardashian's Skims was certainly not on the list. And I'm not the only one who felt that way either. But here we are in a fresh new year and I'm telling you this: swallow your pride and get something from Skims. You won't regret it. In fact, ragging on the Kim K.-owned brand is tired— let's all just accept that mogul has given us something we deserve in the form of really comfortable and wearable basics. And the pieces that converted me to this opinion? The oft-sold-out Fits Everybody Turtleneck Top.
At the end of October last year, I decided the time had come to find some sleek layering tops to wear under sweaters and though I tried my hardest to resist, reason led me to buy the Fits Everybody Turtleneck Top in not one but two colors (I also snapped up a Cotton Jersey Long Sleeve T-shirt, which, in a surprise to absolutely no one, I also love). Once they arrived, I wasted no time examining my purchases. You might even say I went looking for something to be wrong with them. The seams are well sewn and had no loose ends and each top both stretched to put on and hugs my shape without any lumps or unsightly bunching. Think: shapewear but not. Stretchy and breathable, I don't feel like I am wearing sausage casing, which is key for both comfort and self-esteem.
In the last year I've really come to understand not only the importance of layering from a practical standpoint, but also how much of a difference it makes when layers are seamless. It is so irritating to trod around feeling like humpty-dumpty. Not only do these turtlenecks pair perfectly with a knit on top of them, but they also don't add bulk when you layer them under a button up blouse for a cool '90s look. I haven't tried wearing the sand-hued turtleneck alone, but I have taken the black one out for a spin as my top (wearing a sleek black crop underneath) and the effect was really subtly sexy, not cheesy.
Needless to say, these tops were my gateway to the Skims universe. So much so that I splashed out for a Cotton T-Shirt Bodysuit and Fits Everybody Triangle Bralette as a gift to myself. I don't know what else is to come for 2022, but I can say that more Skims are in my future.
