Tanner Hall Delivers Glowing Ski Film Review: "That Ain't A Movie, Bro"
Professional skier Tanner Hall is stoked on Sensus, The Bunch's latest ski movie.
In an Instagram post shared by Sensus producer and star Magnus Graner, Hall slathered praise on the new film.
Over the years, Hall has developed a reputation for proudly broadcasting his opinions—some positive, some negative—on a myriad of ski industry subjects. If Hall likes or dislikes what you're doing, he isn't afraid to let you know.
And, of course, Hall is one of freestyle skiing's elder legends, a pioneering figure known for pushing the sport to new heights. I grew up watching him ski, and now that I'm 26, I'm still watching him ski. Few pros have that kind of longevity.
Thus, Graner and co. probably lost it when Hall put this review of Sensus together. It's not unlike Muhammed Ali telling a young, upstart boxer, "Hey, kid, I like what you're doing."
The fact that The Bunch's work has proved somewhat controversial adds gravitas to Hall's endorsement. Over the years, the European ski crew has pushed films that, for lack of a better descriptor, combine arthouse cinema with skiing.
Some skiers haven't been down with this approach, given that The Bunch, at least with their two previous releases, has included equal parts artistic b-roll (shots that don't include skiing) and skiing. There's a prevalent attitude amongst certain freeskiing sects that the b-roll situation has gotten out of control. If it's a ski movie, they posit, they want to watch skiing, not camera tricks.
Hall acknowledges the lack of skiing in Sensus upfront: "That ain't a movie, bro," he says. "You made like the first visual score." It's an apt descriptor. The Bunch's movies have increasingly strayed from the standard ski movie mold. To those looking for something a little different, Sensus is clearly an excellent place to start—it has Tanner Hall's blessing, after all.
