Tess Holliday's message to trolls who tell her to exercise: 'Worry about your own life'
Etiquette 101: Do not tell people they need to work out. Body-positive model and influencer Tess Holliday took to Instagram to teach this pretty obvious lesson to the people who are constantly telling her how or when to exercise.
“People assume I don’t work out because I don’t feel the need to post it all over the gram, & the reason why? Because it’s no ones business what I do with my body,” Holliday wrote. She gathered together a few of the nasty comments she’s gotten about exercise to illustrate why exactly she felt the need to speak out, and how rude and annoying it is when people try to school her on fitness.
“I’d do cardio if I was her, hopefully she’s doing that too,” someone wrote. “You’re not properly doing squats. The back should be straight. This is important,” wrote someone else. Holliday explained that the feedback has gotten so negative that she’s chosen largely not to share photos of herself at the gym.

When she does post photos of herself doing squats and supervised by a trainer, she still hears from the haters. “When I post about working out, then all of a sudden y’all got jokes, everyone is a doctor & trainer. Y’all just can’t handle seeing someone in a plus size body that isn’t deemed desirable by societies standards THRIVING & it kills y’all,” she wrote. Holliday’s truth-telling post is clearly resonating with her audience. She has hundreds of fans cheering her, calling her beautiful, and thanking for her inspiration in the comments.

“I can’t stand the workout POLICE! I love everything you stand for girl!,” wrote a fan who goes by @micasamantha. Another sympathized with the haters’ seemingly needless bounds for criticism: “You could do 100 squats more than they could and they’d still tell you you need to do 10 more.”
The “workout police” must be on high alert lately, because Holliday’s fellow curvy model and influencer Ashley Graham also had to issue a warning about nasty commenters this week. Graham explained that she too is inundated with critical comments every time she posts a workout video.

She explains that she has a laundry list of reasons to work out. Graham chooses to exercise in order to “stay healthy, feel good, get rid of jet lag, clear my head, show big girls we can move like the rest of em, stay flexible and story, and have more energy.” Contrary to what some of her audience seems to believe, she doesn’t work out to lose weight or curves, because “[she] loves the skin [she’s in].” As with Holliday, the post resonated with followers. “Ppl just don’t get that exercise doesn’t make you skinny it makes you healthy. That’s why I like following you,” wrote one fan.
If personalities as strong as Tess Holliday and Ashley Graham deal with workout-shaming, it’s safe to say that the rest of us have probably faced some troubling ideas about how or why we exercise. Thankfully, we have the strength of Holliday and Graham to guide us through.
