It is midway down a rutted Wyoming Forest Service road that I most appreciate Mavic's new wheels, the Ksyrium Pro Allroad Discs, which are at the forefront of the burgeoning disc- and dirt-road movement. As I round a corner at speed, the 30mm Yksion Elite Allroad tires hook up on the loose, rocky tire track, and the snappy Allroad lets me deftly steer past a rim-crushing rock the size of my head.

At first glance, the Allroad looks like a rebadged Mavic Crossmax SL29 mountain bike wheel, but it has a different rim extrusion and new freehub, plus swappable axle end caps for quick-release or 12- or 15mm thru-axles, so you won't get sidelined as disc road standards settle. The hoops aren't featherweight, but they roll fast and provide a solid blend of lateral stability and cushion, in part because of the included and tubeless-ready tires with inverted side tread (there's also a 28mm slick version).
