Texas great-grandmother shoots and kills alligator because she claims it ate her miniature horse
The expression is that dead men don’t bite — but the same goes for a 12-foot alligator who may have eaten a miniature horse that belonged to Livingston, Texas mayor Judy B. Cochran.
The large gator, who weighed 580-pounds, resided on her ranch and was the only alligator of that size that she theorized could take down her mini-horse, who went missing years ago and whose remains were never found.
Cochran waited three long years to exact her revenge. Cochran bided her time by becoming mayor of her town in May and celebrating becoming a great-grandmother earlier in September, perhaps luring the alligator into a false sense of security. The giant reptile probably thought he got away scot free with his crime.
Now, Mayor Cochran will feast on the meat of her kill and plans to display the alligator’s head in her office — to serve as a warning to anyone who has a taste for miniature horse meat.
The gator foolishly emerged at a time that would sign his death warrant. Polk County, Texas has a limited hunting season for alligators, just 20 days in September. A hook was baited with a raccoon on Cochran’s property, and on Monday, the alligator bit. Cochran killed it with one shot. A video of the kill can be watched here but isn’t for the faint of heart.
However, this isn’t the first time someone of Cochran blood had to take down an alligator. In 2009, Cochran’s then 5-year-old grandson shot and killed an 800-pound, 12-foot-6-inches gator, according to the Houston Chronicle.
