The Giambattista Valli Runway Championed Natural Hair
Runways are typically a harbor for uniformity. Minus the clothes (which are generally connected through a cohesive theme), models, in general, flaunt the same styles of hair and makeup.
Yet in recent years, more designers have embraced natural hair textures — by ditching the wigs and extensions — rather than staging models to look like identical clones (that don’t always flatter or cater to every hair type). So that’s why it was so refreshing to see that Giambattista Valli decided to take a different route for its Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2017 show on Monday. The show featured two models with their own unique and natural hair.
One model walked with little-to-no makeup and a tightly coiled cropped afro. It’s a chic yet simple pairing with the elegant gold ruched dress and silver-and-black sandals she’s wearing.

Another model flaunted her natural mane — also with very minimal makeup — with a sequin-patterned elaborate ensemble and her cropped brown pixie hair.
The rest of the models that walked the Paris show had loosely pulled back ponytails — some were adorned with silk white-tied headbands.
While the overall look seemed to focus more on the threads and be less about the glam, it’s amazing to see that the designer didn’t feel the need to alter anyone’s natural strands all for the sake of fashion. Maybe this will serve as a call to others to follow suit and do the same.
