There's a Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked to These Smoothies

Smoothies are so many people’s go-to for a healthy snack, but as Food Safety News is reporting, these particular smoothies just made a whole bunch of people very sick—as in hepatitis A sick—and the threat may may be totally gone yet.

As of today, six states and 69 people (55 of the cases are from Virginia) are included in the outbreak, which is linked to frozen strawberries from Egypt served in smoothies at Tropical Smoothie Café. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC is currently investigating the case.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has said in a statement that all strawberries were pulled from all locations in early August, but West Virginia officials say an “ongoing public risk remains.”

Public health officials are urging anyone—in any state—who has had a smoothie containing frozen strawberries in the past 50 days to monitor themselves for Hepatitis A symptoms. Symptoms can include jaundice, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine and light-colored stools, and can usually take 15 to 50 days to develop.
