Things to do in Kansas City this weekend Aug. 9-11

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — No matter what part of the Kansas City area you live in, there’s a festival, live performance or sporting event to check out this weekend.

Here are 10 events going on this weekend — Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 — that are worth checking out.

PickleCon

Calling all pickleball fans! Head to Bartle Hall this weekend — to shop all things pickleball at “PickleCon!”

Players of all ages and skill levels can also enter tournaments. It goes until Sunday. Head to the picklecon.com website to buy tickets.

Missouri State Fair

The Missouri State Fair is happening now. From now until August 18th… Head out to Sedalia for the carnival, fair food, and all kinds of family fun.

Friday’s grandstand performance is the Goo Goo Dolls and The Fray. Tracy Lawrence performs on August 13th and Ludacris on August 16th.

Gate admission for adults is $15, $10 for seniors, and $4 for kids six to 12. Kids five and under get in free.

KC Wheel to light wheel red for Special Olympics Kansas

The KC Wheel is working to raise funds to support Special Olympics Kansas and its mission of year-round Olympic-style sports for children and adults with disabilities. This is part of its “One Good Turn Deserves Another” initiative.

On Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., guests of the KC Wheel will have the chance to learn more about Special Olympics Kansas and the programs they provide.

Guests who choose to visit the KC Wheel on August 9 and 10 can donate $10 or more in support of SOKS and will receive a digital photo package as a thank-you from the KC Wheel.

Chiefs first pre-season game

The Kansas City Chiefs play their first preseason game this weekend. They’re heading to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

So hit up your favorite sports bar or your friend with the biggest TV. Kickoff for the preseason game is at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Shaq performing at Kaufman Stadium

The Kansas City Royals take on the Saint Louis Cardinals this weekend right here in Kansas City.
Dj Diesel is also performing a set at Kauffman Stadium for Friday night’s game.

If you didn’t know, that’s Shaquille O’Neal. The first pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Tickets start at around $40.

Curiosity Cube Mobile Science Lab in KC area

MilliporeSigma’s Curiosity Cube is a 22×10-foot, retrofitted shipping container that has been transformed into a mobile science lab. There will be three interactive experiments where students will use modular electronics, digital microscopes and other scientific tools to learn about sustainability.

On Sunday it will be at the Museum at Prairiefire from noon to 5 p.m. On Monday it will be at KC STEM Alliance from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Summer Fun Fest

Beat the heat and have some family fun at Cable Dahmer Arena. Admission is free to the craft and vendor fair, play and create in the kid’s zone, eat with local food trucks, enjoy music from a live DJ, or enjoy $10 unlimited ice skating and bounce house admission with free skate rental.

Ward Parkway Summer Concert Series

The Ward Parkway summer concert series continues this weekend. You’re invited to the Restaurant Pavilion at the Ward Parkway Center for a free outdoor concert.

Gayle Price performs Friday with some soul r-and-b and the Dan Riggs band plays tomorrow. That’s from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ward Parkway Center.

Switchfoot in Kansas City

Grammy award-winning alt band “Switchfoot” is playing in Kansas City this weekend. They made a name for themselves in the early 2000s in the Christian rock scene.

They’re playing at Grinder’s KC on Sunday night. It’s an all-ages show. Doors open at 5, and the show starts at 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at around $50.

KC Sunflower Festival

Join the KC Pumpkin Patch for the opening weekend of the Sunflower Festival. It’s at the KC pumpkin patch in southern Olathe.

Tickets are required for entry, and the sunflower field is only open during hours of operation.
If you buy online, tickets are $15. Otherwise, they’re $16.

Hozier at Azura Amphitheater

Hozier is performing in the metro this weekend. The “Unreal Un-Earth Tour” is on Friday night at the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
