This ‘Racist’ Dunkin’ Donuts Ad is Dividing the Internet
An Instagram post on Dunkin’ Donuts Egypt’s page left a bad taste in some people’s mouths.
The brand came under fire for posting this image of two donuts – one covered in white sugar and the other dipped in chocolate. Translated, the text on the picture says “If darkness is half beauty, then whiteness is full beauty.”
Puzzlingly, the caption below it reads, “Because we are against racism, we will eat both of them, not only one. Which will you choose?”
Although the post has since been deleted, social media users were quick to spot and call out Dunkin’ Donuts on their controversial ad.
I’d love to see @DunkinDonuts justify this racist ad that describes a white donut = complete beauty & the black one = half beauty pic.twitter.com/JAhLpoFc4T

Racist Dunkin’ Donuts ad in Egypt. “White is full beauty, Brown is half beauty.” Racism lies in the smallest things, sometimes. pic.twitter.com/JUtI81X4be

Congrats to @DunkinDonuts, for getting us to talk about something else besides how bad your donuts are.
Like, how you’re hugely racist ???? https://t.co/1PaqlHkK3e— Mohamed El Dahshan (@eldahshan) September 24, 2016
Some people saw otherwise and thought the reaction to the ad was overblown:
@danas4827 @leavebeylonely it’s like that bc the chocolate is only covering half the donut are you serious. this is such a reach.

@danas4827 @DunkinDonuts i don’t think it’s supposed to be funny, it’s supposed to be a rejection of discriminating based on appearance

Dunkin’ Donuts has since removed the post and apologized, replying to tweets accusing the brand of being racist with a statement saying, “As soon as we became aware of the social media post by our Egyptian franchise, we asked for it to be removed. Our franchisee immediately complied. We apologize for the offense this posting cause.”
