Thousands of British Taxpayers Signed a Petition to Make the Royals Pay for Princess Eugenie's Wedding
Who doesn't love a good royal wedding and all that it entails? The pomp! The circumstance! The photos of Prince George and Princess Charlotte up to their usual shenanigans!
Well, thousands of U.K. taxpayers who are footing the security bill, that's who.
Just two weeks out from the Princess Eugenie's wedding to Jack Brooksbank on Oct. 12, a petition to make the Royal fam pay for the wedding from their own velvet-lined pockets began floating around the web. And it's already got 6,000 signatures. The petition was launched by Republic, a campaign group seeking to abolish the monarchy altogether.
Eugenie's wedding stirred up quite a bit of good ol' fashioned British drama when taxpayers learned they would be shelling out nearly two million pounds (!) for Eugenie's wedding, though that number is largely security costs, not necessarily tea and crumpets.
That said, the cost to taxpayers is significantly less than the amount of money spent on both William and Kate's and Harry and Meghan's weddings (which rang in at £24 million and £35 million, respectively), but Eugenie's status as a non-working royal is what's truly got the public's panties in a bunch.
"This petition calls upon the House of Commons to urge the Government to ensure the highest standards of openness and transparency relating to the funding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding, commit no public funds to the wedding and to publish a report of all costs to taxpayers," reads the petition.
Sure, there's just two weeks until the nuptials, but it doesn't look like this royal drama will be simmering down anytime soon.
